As many of you know, my favorite fight was the grueling showdown between Aaron Pryor and Alexis Arguello, and when this book: “Beloved Warrior: The Rise and Fall of Alexis Arguello” by Christian Giudice was released, I was very eager to read it and I was not disappointed.
In 2009, Arguello died under suspicious circumstances and his story was never really told. Die hard boxing fans were aware of part of the story, but not all of it…until now. This book is advertised as covering the rise and the fall and it does just that, beginning in the beginning, covering the first defeat of his record, which was a first round stoppage…not a sparkling debut for a future star. This story is about redemption and tragedy, courage and chaos, and shows how politics can interfere with sports and sports figures. This is some compelling stuff.
I was such a huge fan of Arguello that this book really had to be great to satisfy the need to know about his life. The facts are there, but Giudice has the ability to translate emotions into written form, painting a picture that not only brings a boxing fan like me back to the time when Arguello was in there brawling, but shows those that have not seen it, just exactly what made him a great fighter.
Alexis Arguello was a tremendous fighter, led a tremendous life, and this book captures it and immortalizes him with every page. I tip my hat to the author. What a book!
