Wladimir Klitschko Future Opponent: WBA’s #2 Luis Ortiz – HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING NEWS

By Geno McGahee

If you want to see corruption happen in front of your very eyes, check out the WBA’s heavyweight ranking. There are a couple of names that stand out as suspicious characters, but none more than the #2 contender, Luis Ortiz, 19-0, 16 KO’s. With the number 1 spot vacant, this means that Ortiz is getting close to a mandatory shot. He is ranked above Chris Arreola, Bryant Jennings, Deontay Wilder and Alexander Povetkin. The WBA also features Fres Oquendo and Travis Kauffman in their top ten, which should tell you just how seriously you should now take this organization.

You’re only as good as your competition. So, let’s examine the competition of Ortiz. The collective record for his opposition is 241 wins, 162 losses, and 16 draws, leaving a winning percentage of 58%. So, what propelled him into this spot in the WBA? Was it his victory over Santiago De Paula, 13-9-1? Maybe it was his explosive KO win over Jose Santos Peralta, 1-2, or his stoppage of Walter Palacios, 20-17-2. Maybe the no contest in his last fight against Joseph Rabotte, 11-25-1, was the clincher. His competition makes Deontay Wilder’s competition look like George Foreman. There is no reason to rank Ortiz in the top 15 at this point, let alone at the top spot. Wladimir Klitschko has been destroying top competition that has proven their worth and have earned this spot. The WBA is trying to sneak this guy in.

Maybe Ortiz is the real deal, but at this point, he has not fought any top 100 heavyweight and this situation may deserve an investigation, along with the inclusion of Kauffman. He is another top 10 ranked heavyweight that has not fought anyone with a pulse. Boxing has enough problems without fixing the rankings to push up certain fighters that do not merit the spot.
