Joe Louis – Abe Simon: The Last Scheduled 20 Round Fight
For me the most significant fight in the past 75 years would have to be, the 20 rounder between Joe Louis and Abe Simon on March 21, 1941. Joe Louis retained his title with a 13th round stoppage of Abe Simon in the last major fight scheduled for 20 rounds. This to me was one of the biggest changes in boxing history.
Another historical fight took place on September 7, 1893 when James J. Corbett knocked out John L. Sullivan in the 21st round in New Orleans in the first heavyweight championship fight fought under Queensberry Rules. I so adore the history of the sweet science that is boxing. To me, every fight is significant and special. But there are those extra awesome milestone fights that are not only impregnated in my mind but there in black and white for us all to read up on. It’s what makes it the greatest sport ever.
