Rocky Marciano & Floyd Mayweather, JR: Stop with the Undefeated Record Debate Already – There Is NONE!
By “Bad” Brad Berkwitt
For the last two years, the discussion has raged on that if Floyd Mayweather, JR., 48-0, 26 KO’s goes to 49-0, he ties Rocky Marciano’s, 49-0, 43 KO’s undefeated record as a champion and of course, if he goes to 50-0, he breaks it. However, Mayweather, JR. has been a multiple division champion and Marciano, a one division champion. They both ruled boxing in their respective eras, but that is where anything compared should end. You cannot say if Mayweather, JR. goes undefeated and retires, he breaks a Heavyweight Champion’s record.
Over the years since Marciano retired as the Heavyweight Champion, Larry Holmes would be the only other Heavyweight Champion to even come close to breaking Rocky’s record when he was 48-0, but lost in his 49th fight, to Michael Spinks in 1985.
Sure, Floyd will go in the record books and his record may not ever be broken as it appears Rocky’s may not either. However, to compare a lower weight fighter to the Heavyweight division is just ridiculous for record purposes. End of Story…
