Packy’s World: Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto – Canelo Alvarez, Clark Gable, My Pal Al, Welcome to RSR James “Quick” Tillis & Mayor Ed Koch Posthumously Awarded The Chutzpah Award
Oy Vay are you going to hear it today… RSR readers sorry for my absence as of late, but I have been under the weather with a stomach virus that has been kicking me in the bagels for over a week. I finally feel better and have been going through your emails about my columns and it warms my heart that you are enjoying them. Hey, if you didn’t, your bagels would be in trouble! Let’s get right to my column….
Oscar De La Hoya… Is it me, or is most press about Oscar negative today? I hate to see that because he was one heck of a warrior in the ring and faced everyone unlike Floyd “Make It Rain” Mayweather, JR. does. I crack up everytime I hear Bradley use that moniker for Floyd, so I had to use it as well.
Miguel Cotto – Canelo Alvarez… Yes, Cotto is past his prime and his recent wins are way overrated, but nonetheless, he is one tough SOB who will either beat Alvarez or go out on his shield trying! My prediction is Alvarez in 8. I cannot wait to watch this fight in November.
Clark Gable… What an underrated actor he was. Sure, he was great in Gone With The Wind, but there were so many other great movies he was in. Here are my top five (leaving Gone With The Wind Off, though it’s a classic!)
5. The Misfits
4. Run Silent Run Deep
3. Command Decision
2. Honky Tonk
1. San Francisco
My Pal Al (“Bad” Brad’s Father) … To say I miss my dearest friend as of late, would be an understatement. I visited his grave recently and just sat and talked to him (feel his spirit everytime I go) for an hour. Al, was the most loyal SOB to walk the earth in his 70 years, I can tell you that.
So here is my Al story. When Bradley AKA “Bad” Brad was much younger, Al would love taking him to Nathan’s on Collins Ave on Miami Beach where we would all meet to have some great hot dogs.
Well, in the back of the joint, there was a game room. Are they even around today? Al, would always play Bradley in Air Hockey and when Bradley would be ahead, he would pull the old, “Wow, look over there at that!” Bradley would look and Al would make a goal and we would crack up. As Bradley got in his teenage years, Al would still do it and at that point, I know Bradley knew the trick, but he got such a kick out how animated Al would get, he would let him get away with it. I talk to Bradley quite often and I know how much he misses his dad. I have to give him so much credit because he keeps his memory so vivid. He has done this since Al passed, on July 2, 1998. Sleep well Sweet Prince, you may be gone, but you’re NEVER forgotten…
James “Quick” Tillis… What a delight to see you on Ringside Report. We have never met, but I know Al and Bradley knew you from Allen Park, when Bradley used to box there in the early 80’s and you trained too. Al always spoke highly of you. So any pal of Al, is a pal of mine. Welcome to the team. If anyone gives you any shit, you let ole “Boom Boom” know, so I can kick them right in their bagels!
The Chutzpah Award… The Chutzpah Award is posthumously awarded to former Mayor Ed Koch. Ed, was a personal friend of mine when I lived in NYC. Many times, while he was in office, we would meet to have lunch. He was beloved and had huge bagels. I feel his efforts for NYC have gone unappreciated over the years, but not from me. RIP Ed…
