Packy’s World: Canelo Alvarez INSIDER Says All Was Not Well in TRAINING CAMP, Billy Daniels, Paul Muni, My Pal Al & The Chutzpah Award Posthumously Goes to Actor James Garner
By Packy “Boom Boom” Goldstein
Oy Vay are you going to hear it today… My Sadie is breaking my bagels at an epic clip, but I had to get this column out or Bradley gets in my tuckus! Well, I have a hot topic and may be an exclusive from my buddy in Las Vegas who goes by Sheldon “The Slayer”. Don’t ask…. Let’s get right to it RSR readers, I hear Sadie coming to my office door.
Canelo Alvarez… Sheldon tells me on a reliable source inside Alvarez’s camp that his training did not go as well as they are portraying it. With that said, I am changing my prediction from my last column right now to Cotto by 8th round TKO.
Billy Daniels… I used to see him in Vegas do his act and nobody owned “That Old Black Magic” better than he did. Many times we had drinks after his show and the broads loved him. RIP buddy…
Paul Muni… Way before Marlon Brando was Paul Muni. He was a powerhouse on the screen and started on the Yiddish Stage. Here are my top five Muni movies.
5. Scarface (1932 original)
4. The Life of Emile Zola
3. Angel On My Shoulder
2. The Story of Louis Pasteur
1. The Last Angry Man
My Pal Al (“Bad” Brad’s Father)… Al loved the big fights. Bradley, Al and I never missed one on Closed Circuit before PPV. So it’s 1981, and we are at the Sugar Ray Leonard – Tommy Hearns CC at Dania Jai Alai in Miami and Al always one to love a good laugh starts on one said rooting for Ray. Then goes to the other side and roots for Tommy. He got folks so riled up, they wanted to box each other. Well, what does Al do in only Al fashion? He takes bets and by the end of the fight, he walks away with about $1500.00 in his pocket. Keep in mind, this was 1981, and $1500.00 went a lot further than today.
The Chutzpah Award… The Chutzpah Award Posthumously goes to screen gem, James Garner. I was talking to Bradley the other day and he brought him up because Garner was from Norman, Oklahoma. It brought back memories when I was on the set with Al, when Jimmy was shooting, Support Your Local Sheriff. Al knew him from his Hollywood days and introduced us. Garner, was what you saw on the screen, a sweetheart of a guy, but he pulled no punches. He stood up for what he believed in always and I saw him do it during the Civil Rights Movement and when the studio attempted to screw him on The Rockford Files. Jimmy beat them in court, but it took years. The last time we spoke on the phone was shortly before he passed and I can tell you, I cried when we said goodbye because I knew my friend was not long for this world. I miss you Jimmy G. Have fun up there with Al and I am sure in the not to near future, I will be joining you crumb bums! Save room for Ole Packy at the table.
