Saturday night at The Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, 33-5-1, 18 KO’s looked to make another push for a welterweight title as he took take on David Emanuel Peralta, 26-2-1, 14 KO’s. Peralta, who has fought all his fights in Argentina made his US debut against Guerrero. Coming into the fight little was known of the underdog Peralta, and as the fight started Guerrero looked as if he was in complete control of the fight landing shots at will and using his experience to outbox the journeyman Peralta. Then in the middle rounds Peralta began using his 4 inch reach advantage, his jab to score as his “Ali Shuffle” and awkwardness began to frustrate Guerrero.

Guerrero never adapted to Peralta and spent the rest of the fight trying to adjust. In the 9th round Peralta landed a flush right hand the sent Guerrero falling into the ropes but the replay reveled that it may have been a trip that sent him stumbling. At the end of 10, it was clear that Peralta did just enough to pull off the victory and the judges agreed as the scores were 115-113 (Peralta), 115-113 (Guerrero) and 116-112 (Peralta) handing Peralta the split decision. After the fight Guerrero stated “I thought I clearly won the fight.” For the judge to say I lost eight rounds sounds crazy to me. Peralta was very awkward, but I felt I won. I won the rounds when I boxed. I spoke briefly to David Peralta and David told me “I haven’t fought since last year, I was a cab driver, driving a cab in Argentina” I was offered a chance to come to the U.S. and fight and I came away victorious. For Guerrero this is now his 4th loss in his last 6 fights, with one of the 6 being a controversial win over Aaron Martinez.

In the Co-main event fan favorite and all action warrior, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo 24-6, 20 KO’s battled Mexican journeyman Freddy Hernandez, 34-8, 22 KO’s. In a battle that was non-stop through all 10 rounds. Hernandez the taller fighter used his reach and counter punches early to hold off a charging Angulo who landed several big shots on the face and body of Hernandez in a battle that went back and forth like a Rock’em Sock’em Robots game. In the 6th round Hernandez was cut by a heavy overhand right by Angulo and “El Perro” continued to fight hard and seemed to take several of the middle round before Hernandez adjusted in the last two rounds. After 10 action packed rounds the judges had it 97-93 (Twice) and 98-92 all in favor of Freddy Hernandez. Hernandez stated after the fight “I have a great deal of respect for Alfredo, and tonight the people saw two real Mexican warriors.”

To open up the televised portion of the card Saturday night in Anaheim 2012 US Olympian Junior middleweight Terrell Gausha, 19-0, 9 KO’s took on Steve Martinez, 16-3, 13 KO’s. In a hard to score fight Martinez seemed to be the aggressor in fight where he attacked the Olympian Gausha early and often. Gausha tried to keep Martinez at bay by sticking him with his jab and countering the bull rushing Martinez. Martinez continued his aggressiveness the the middle and late round as Gausha would cleanly counter every time Martinez attacked. Gausha who never looked comfortable did just enough to win as after 10 rounds the judges had it 97-93 (twice) and 95-95. Gausha stated after the fight “He was aggressive but I was able to solve him.” This was a real test and just what I needed, I need the competition to be the best and become a world champion. I wasn’t surprised by the one scorecard for a draw, it was a close fight but I definitely won.
