Saturday night, at the USC Galens Center in Los Angeles, California, Jermall Charlo, 25-0,19 KO’s successfully defended his IBF Junior Middleweight title by knocking out Julian “J-Rock” Williams, 22-1-1, 14 KO’s in the fifth round. The champion sent Williams to the canvas three times en route to an impressive stoppage victory and making a strong statement to everyone in the junior middleweight division.

In the second round, Charlo caught Williams with a solid jab that sent the challenger to the canvas. Williams seemed to recover from the flash knockdown and scored with a big overhand right himself by the end of the round. Charlo, utilizing a slight size advantage, maintained a comfortable difference though and used his jab effectively.

After a close fourth round, the champion took control in the fifth round when both fighters decided to go toe-to-toe with each other. A flurry of shots highlighted by a right hand sent Williams to the canvas for the second knockdown of the fight. Williams, who appeared to be on wobbly legs as he rose, was unable to fend off Charlo. The champion, seen in the neutral corner champing at the bit for action to continue, went back to work and started letting his hands go. After another intense flurry, a left uppercut dropped Williams for a third and final time.

“I did what I was supposed to do, I’m very happy with my performance, I listened to my trainer,” said Charlo after the win while getting booed by the crowd. Their reaction was because Williams went to Charlo’s corner to shake hands, and Charlo refused to do so.
“I said ‘I don’t want your congratulations, I want your apology.’ I don’t care what they (the fans) say, I knocked him out. No matter what they say about me I’m going to continue to work hard. I did what my trainer told me to do, I stayed in there and bang the shot came home. I’m never disrespected this dude, never, until I knocked him out.”

“I just want to tell Julian Williams I’m sorry,” he later said. As for a reasoning, he explained, “Leading up to this fight Julian Williams talked, and I held it in. I did what I had to do to become the champion of the world and I deserve my respect. He disrespected me all the way up to the fight.

Final punch statistics for the fight may reflect how much stronger Charlo was then his challenger. Both fighters threw nearly the same number of punches and connected on the same percentage of shots. Charlo landed 46 of his 175 total punches (26.3%) whereas Williams connected on 48 of his 181 total punches (26.5%). Furthermore, Charlo landed fewer power shots (25) than Williams (31) did throughout the fight.
“I made the fight happen; I gave the fans what they wanted to see. I stayed at 154 pounds, although I do want to move up to 160, just to fight someone the world said I couldn’t beat.”
