Three Overrated Fighters in Boxing Today – Update
[AdSense-A]
About three months ago, I did an article on three fighters I thought were overrated. There were some criticism on my picks, especially for one particular fighter. However I’m doing an update and my mind has changed a little bit. Will the same fighters I picked last time stay on the list? Is there any new additions? Let’s take a look.
1. Tyson Fury: Fury is still on my list but at least now he is not considered the “Lineal” champion like he was a few months ago. Fury won the “Lineal” title by beating Wladimir Kiltschko in an uneventful fight. On top of that he bragged about being the champion, but yet never defended the actual titles. What kind of a champion is that? So after two years and a half of not fighting and since his license was reinstated, he decided to come back this year. His comeback fight was a disgrace to begin with as he fought a blown up Cruiserweight in Sefer Seferi which didn’t prove anything. I get the fact he was not going to fight anybody of note or tough, as Fury was coming off a long layoff. At least he should have fought a Heavyweight. Seferi on top of that didn’t want to fight, which made for a terrible fight. So Fury is back again talking as usual that he is a top Heavyweight. In reality, he’s a long way from there based on his last fight. Fury just needs to get in better shape and start fighting somebody in the top ten at least.
2. Adrien Broner: Broner is still on my list as being overrated as long as PBC, the media, and Showtime continue to make him a relevant fighter. I give him credit for being an active fighter and showing a good chin but that’s about it. As I stated before, he has been involved in fights where he should have lost the decision and he continues to get gift decisions. I did say I would give Broner more credit for a win against Jessie Vargas. Nothing has changed though as he should have lost the decision against Jessie Vargas this past April. The fight was not another draw. Broner continues to get big fights and unfortunately some people still like him for having no class. As I watched his fight against Vargas, any punch he threw got so much praise from the Showtime broadcast team. Broner is simply overrated and let’s not make a big deal of him winning titles in four different classes. Once again it’s easy to win titles in multiple weight classes nowadays.
3. Guillermo Rigondeaux: First of all, Rigondeaux is one the best talents I have seen, make no mistake about it. He is one of the best Cuban amateur boxers of all time and he won two Olympic gold medals (2000 and 2004). Yes, he did get off to a great start in his professional career in 2009 and in his 9th professional fight he won the WBA World Super Bantamweight Title by stopping Rico Ramos in 2012. He then beat WBO World Super Bantamweight Champion Nonito Donaire to unify the titles and claimed the lineal title. However that was back in 2013 and Rigo has not done too much since. He fought one more time in 2013 and beat Joseph Agbeko. Since 2013 up until now, he has only fought six times in five years. I don’t give him too much slack when he lost to Lomachenko, because he moved up two weight classes but he did quit in the fight. He has defended his titles at least and remains one of the top fighters at Super Bantamweight still, but Ring Magazine still ranks him in the top pound for pound list according to the most recent issue. At one time, he was considered an avoided fighter, but that has diminished now. I think he needs to fight top fighters like Isaac Dogboe, Rey Vargas, or Daniel Roman to claim his pound for pound status once again.
I did remove Vasyl Lomachenko off my overrated list as he now proved to me that he is one of the best fighters pound for pound after his victory over Jorge Linares. I still don’t think he is number one pound for pound but he is now getting close to it. You have to give credit where credit is due.
