This weekend is anticipating to be another great weekend in boxing. DAZN has been on fire lately with it’s boxing coverage and will bring another great card on Saturday afternoon with the WBSS tournament. Facebook Watch will also have boxing coverage on Saturday night as well. However one fight has fight of the year written all over it and will be streamed live on ESPN+. It will be another addition to the many slug fests in the Super Featherweight division and a battle between two Mexican warriors. Miguel Berchelt and Miguel Roman look to steal the show on Saturday and entertain the fans. The fight will be taking place at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas.

If you don’t have a subscription to ESPN+ by now, you should subscribe for this fight alone.

Miguel “El Alacran” Berchelt, 34-1, 30 KO’s, of Yucatan, Mexico will be making the 4th defense of the WBC World Super Featherweight title and has been a professional for 8 years. He is at the prime of his career at the age of 26 and is a very active fighter, as this will be his 3rd fight this year. His only blemish was back in 2014 when he was stopped in the 1st round, but in a fight where many felt the fight was stopped too quick after he got up from a knockdown. Since then, Berchelt has been on a roll with 13 straight victories. Berchelt had fought mainly in Mexico and was unknown to the American audiences but that all changed last year. Berchelt won the WBC title when he faced off with tough Mexican Francisco Vargas in a battle. It was a close competitive fight but Berchelt, the better technician, won by a 11th round stoppage. Berchelt followed this up with an unanimous decision over Japan’s Takashi Miura. Berchelt had beat two of the top Super Featherweights in the division and now is currently ranked #1 by Ring Magazine. Berchelt scored two stoppages this year so far in Mexico, and is now looking to unify the titles in his weight division. He first needs to get past Miguel Roman.

Miguel “Mickey” Roman, 60-12, 47 KO’s, of Chihuahua, Mexico is looking to spoil Berchelt’s plans of unifying the titles in the future. Even though Roman is at a young age of 33, he is considered a veteran in the sport. Roman has been boxing for 15 years now and had his share of ups and downs. The first nine years of his career, Roman fought some of the best fighters but always came up short and sustained 11 losses. Two of the losses were for world titles. It seemed that Roman’s career was over, but he kept fighting and won 18 fights in a row. Roman would then land a fight with Takashi Miura last year and both fighters went toe to toe in a slug fest. Roman got stopped in the 12th round but once again put up a great effort. Roman would get a second chance later in the year against former Champion Orlando Salido. Salido like Roman was also an action fighter and the fight did not disappoint. Roman came through with the victory in a 9th round stoppage over Salido. Since then Roman has stayed busy this year with two stoppage victories in Mexico. Now Roman has got another chance at a world title and he will make the most of it as this might be his last shot at a world title.

So far, we have seen great battles in this division such as: Vargas Vs Miura, Vargas Vs Salido, Vargas Vs Berchelt, Roman Vs Miura, Roman Vs Salido, and Berchelt Vs Miura. The fight between Berchelt and Roman is another can’t miss fight and will add to the round robin in the Super Featherweight division. This reminds me a little bit of the days in the late 70’s and early 80’s when fighters like Alexis Arguello, Rafael “Bazooka” Limon, Bobby Chacon, Cornelius “Boza” Edwards, and Rolando Navarrete were participating in their own round robin in this weight class back in the day.
