Lyft and Uber – Breaking Business News

The battle in California over Lyft and Uber has me perplexed. The gist of the legal battle is that Uber and Lyft, gig economy jobs, are denying their workers rights that employees should have. Now, I am a union supporter. If there was a mis treatment of employees, I am in favor of changing that to benefit the working person.
But where I am confused, and maybe I just need some clarification on, is that Uber and Lyft Drivers are technically 1099 employees, independent contractors. I was under the assumption the attraction to driving for a ride share service was to work when you wanted for as long as you wanted. It would seem they have the flexibility. I am not sure what makes them any different than other independent contractors. I am a 1099 employee for some side hustle. It is made clear I do not get offered benefits or rights employees may get for these organizations I work for.
At the end of the day, the economy is a mess. People have a conscious right to work for Uber or Lyft if they want work. If they are a true 1099 employee, they can continue to get paid for the time they punch in and out as their flexibility allows. The growth of Uber specifically allows for more work during this COVID era with Eats and other divisions that will be evolving. Lets not beat those who are giving opportunity at this point.
