A View of Donald Trump From Scotland!

[AdSense-A]

By Donald “Braveheart” Stewart

A view from the new Kailyard or, how you look over there, from over here…

(kailyard n. a genre of sentimental Scottish literature turned into effective invective comment from one Donald worth reading…)

As I sit in my Kailyard I have to ask – is that any way to run an election?

From way over here we were terrified. According to the world news we thought there was a Civil War in the offing. Australia were so concerned they announced that citizens should not travel to the US because of the unrest.

Then there was the boarding up of shops. City centers across the US had that “we are awaiting a Hurricane” look. Boarding things up is not a tourist advert.

Then there is the drive by bus thing where the threat of violence in Texas nearly caused a bus to crash because one side took offence from the arrival and with the campaigning of another.

There was even roads banged up with supporters stopping people travelling and events cancelled because people with guns might turn up…

If you wanted a vision of a Dystopian reality, this from abroad seemed it.

And in the centre, there was one man.

I realised I recognized the behavior.

Increasingly isolated and surrounded by sycophants who were willing to tell him only what he wanted to hear, his entourage were slavish followers who were not even doing themselves a favour. As the end they began to appear across the horizon, his face, seen so often on billboards and across the whole of the country, appeared tired, confused and bewildered. His speech was incoherent at times, rambling, as monumentally bizarre claims were being made but his followers were still, though dwindling, seeking to promote that message through the press. His party, once filled with people who thought him dangerous, supported him and his world view until they were little more than a rubber stamp in even his most outlandish claims, but they were now falling into one simple camp – those who see their future as being one without him. His cult of personality where he became bigger than the party he was once elected to serve and who he now saw as his servants, was on the turn. There was not to be another triumphant march in the capitol which was widely reported to be much bigger than it was. This was a different time. And they were a changing.

A description of Trump?

No.

This is a description of the end of time for Benito Mussolini. The Italian fascist dictator found it hard to admit the time had come for him to give up power and the first time he was ousted, Hitler intervened and put him back in power. There are some who could claim that Putin would do the same for Trump. They would be wrong. Putin has bigger fish to fry.

Democracy is a fragile thing and we have seen just how fragile this year. Your founding fathers knew that. You now know that too.

Be aware that whatever Donald J Trump represented, it is still there. His legacy shall outlive his tenure. You need to heal that. You need to reach out and try and make something happen that is better than what has been there before. There are easy wins for the Biden presidency in the first few months. There are popular decisions but also a pandemic. There is a Supreme Court and a Government that needs careful finessing. It needs a politician with great experience.

I think you have him.

But in one term alone, the pain, the hurt, the destruction of values and the devastation of the last four years shall not be wiped out. It shall take much longer than that.

It may take two further terms of a Kamala Harris presidency. She has four years to prove she can. You have four years to start to heal, then double that to create real and true opportunity.

Dear America, for the four years of Donald J Trump, you are forgiven. The global fight back is on. Hearts and minds can be ours again.
