The first fight, was a 4 round Lightweight bout, featuring Patrick Chaffin from Memphis TN Vs. Emanuel Johnson from Waldorf, MD. This was Johnson’s third pro fight and Chaffins’s pro debut. With a barrage of punches in the first round, a dazed Chaffin was TKO’d in the first round. At one point in the brief fight, Chaffin was so done, after getting hit so many times, he turned his back towards his opponent trying to get away from him. Chaffin’s pro debut did not go as he had expected.
Next up was another Lightweight 6 round bout. John Wampash from Quito, Ecuador against Joshua Davis from Washington, D.C. Wampash was listed as a 12 fight veteran while Davis’ record of 7-1, 3 KO’s. This fight went a little longer, not by much though. It was over after Davis delivered several wicked body shots to Wampash that put him down too many times for him to recover. It was over with a KO in 55 seconds in the second round. At one point, I looked through my camera to get a shot of Wampash on one knee after being knocked down and he looked defeated.
The third fight was a 4 round Junior Welterweight bout, with hometown favorite Mykal Fox from Forestville, MD with a record of 3-0, 1 KO Vs. Sean Lockhart from Columbia, SC, listed as a 30 record fight veteran. From the beginning Fox outfoxed Lockhart at every turn. He established his jab early on beating Lockhart to the veritable punch at every turn. Fox moved upstairs and downstairs and at several times I thought I heard Go Go congas being played but it was just Fox playing a tune on Lockhart’s body.
This fight remarkably went the distance. Fox for some reason couldn’t put Lockhart away but ultimately came away with the unanimous decision. Look out for Fox in the future. If he continues on this path, at 6’3”, with a little more muscle, he could be a threat in the division.
Grover Young from Memphis, TN with a record of 8 -13, 5 KO’s, came out first to do battle against Dwayne McRae of Washington, DC. McRae has a record of 14 -3,8 KO’s for a 6 round heavyweight bout. McRae looked the fitter of the two fighters. I overheard someone say Young resembled a dough boy. Sometimes many a surprise has come in an unsuspecting package and McRae found out that Young could deliver. There were moments in the fight were McRae would deliver some good shots but, not as many as Young. Young was the stronger and more aggressive fighter and landed better more decisive punches. This fight went the distance and being a hometown favorite, McRae won by decision.
Next up was a 6 round Middleweight bout between Brandon Quarles of Alexandria, VA against Dennis Sharpe of Bayonne, NJ. Quarles record is 13-3, 5 KO’s and Sharpe’s is 17-14-3, 4 KO’s. Unfortunately for Sharpe his record takes another hit and Quarles records is elevated. Quarles easily handled Sharpe from the onslaught of the fight and finally hit Sharpe with blows that gave way to a 4th round TKO.
The semi main event a Junior Middleweight 6 round fight featuring, Terry Cade from Aiken, SC with a record of 4-6-1, 2 KOs against an enthusiastic hometown crowd supported Jarrett Hurd who hails from Accokeek, MD with a 12-0, 3 KO’s. Hurd proved to everyone and especially Cade that he has the skills and the ringmanship to go far in this sport. He knocked out Cade in the first round with a blow that sent the crowd roaring in applause.
The final and main event, a 10 round Welterweight bout the one everyone came to see, was the fight between hometown hero Dusty Hernandez-Harrison from Washington, DC with a record of 23-0, 12 KO’s versus Michael Clark by way of Columbus, OH with a record of 44-11-1, 8 KO’s. From the very beginning when I witnessed the first jabs threw, there was pit in my stomach of dread for Clark. Now on any given day any one can be defeated. This was not that day for Clark. He had a better chance in hitting the Powerball before he could have beaten Hernandez-Harrison. It was over at 1:42 of the first round with a genuine knockout. Clark was so gone they had to bring a stool in the middle of the ring to sit him down on.The crowd expressed its gratitude and enjoyment befitting of a gladiator that just slaughtered his opponent in the coliseum.
All in all it was a great night for boxing.
In attendance at ringside were many Ward counsel members to include, Vincent Orange and Yvette Alexander along with Democratic Mayoral Candidate Muriel Bowser and the current Mayor Vincent Gray.
