Boxing fans get ready for a rematch of one of the best fights of the year so far. On Sept 6, for free on CBS, from Corpus Christi, Texas, WBA bantamweight champ Jaime McDonnell, 26-2-1, 12 KO’s, of England gives Japan’s Tomoki Kameda, 31-1, 19 KO’s, a much deserved rematch.

The two bantamweight warriors fought back in May in a back and forth affair that saw Kameda score a third round knockdown only to have McDonnell rally late to hold onto his world title with a split decision verdict in one of the fight of the year candidates for 2015.

Kameda came into their first bout undefeated and held the WBO bantamweight title before signing to fight McDonnell. Because the WBO doesn’t recognize secondary WBA champs in the same division where they also have a “super” champ, they stripped Kameda of his world title, so only McDonnell’s title was on the line. Kameda took the fight anyways because he valued the US television exposure over the WBO belt. It was a fight that could have gone either way, so it was extra devastating for Kameda to lose the razor thin decision, and his undefeated record, after being stripped of his world title. One thing he did gain was exposure to American fight fans as an all out warrior that would be welcome back anytime. Kameda is very happy to have been granted the rematch and to make his second straight appearance on CBS in America where he vows to put in another fan friendly performance.

McDonnell deserves all the credit in the world for granting this dangerous rematch in the midst of easier offers. Most would have been happy to escape the brutal bout with their world title still around their waste, and to never look back. Even in winning, Kameda is going to hurt you.

Tomoki is of course part of the incredible Kameda fighting family which boasts three world class fighting brothers, Tomoki, Koki, and Daiku, who have all been world champions. He is a banger that comes to put it all on the line in Arturo Gatti’esque fashion. McDonnell is five years older at 29, and has come into his own late in his career. In his late prime, he has used his insane size for a bantamweight, 5’10 with 72″ reach, to box stylishly from the outside with a nice jab, a good mix of going to the head and body, and accurate counter punching. Kameda certainly has the power advantage, making this another classic case of the boxer vs the brawler which has made for some of the best fights in history.

Look forward to another fight of the year candidate in Texas featuring the unlikely pairing of little men from Japan and England that will no doubt endear them to American fans once again. I’m leaning towards a Kameda victory this time but regardless who wins, let’s hope it’s another thriller that will warrant a rubber match in early 2016.
