Oscar De La Hoya Back to Back Promoter of the Year – Breaking Boxing News

ODHBy Anthony “Stacks” Saldaña

For the second year in a row Sports Illustrated Magazine has named “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya promoter of the year. What won this for Oscar people ask? Well let’s start in January of 2015. Golden Boy Promotions announced the signing of 12 fighters to exclusive promotional agreements. Coming to Oscar De La Hoya’s company were six international boxers. Japanese welterweight Yoshihiro Kamegai, Filipino lightweight Mercito Gesta, Brazilian junior welterweight Everton Lopes, Mexican lightweight Gilberto Gonzalez, Mexican middleweight Antonio Gutierrez and Colombian bantamweight Oscar Negrete, as well as six California prospects, featherweight Abraham Lopez, featherweight Roy Tapia, junior lightweight Christian Gonzalez, featherweight Emilio Sanchez, lightweight Jesus Ivan Delgado and featherweight Nick Arce. Oscar wasted no time showcasing these fighter as just a few months later on March 6th he brought back Golden Boys LA Fight Club Series to the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles. A series which originated at the Nokia Theater and had produced talent such as former world champions Abner Mares, “Vicious” Victor Ortiz, as well as Jessie Vargas, Ronnie Rios, Carlos Molina, and Manuel “Tino” Avila.

De La Hoya who won Promoter of the Year in 2014 made a promise to continue to bring the best possible fights to the fans in 2015. By Oscar signing David Lemieux and resigning Lucas Matthysse in January, De La Hoya was able to keep his promise by bringing fans fights such as Lucas Matthysse vs. Ruslan Provodnikov, Canelo Alvarez vs. James Kirkland Jorge Linares vs. Kevin Mitchell, Francisco Vargas vs. Will Tomlinson, Sadam Ali vs. Francisco Santana, Humberto Soto vs. Antonio Orozco, Rocky Juárez vs. Robinson Castellanos, Hassan N’Dam vs. David Lemieux, Vyacheslav Shabranskyy vs. Paul Parker, Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez, Lucas Matthysse vs. Viktor Postol, Takashi Miura vs. Francisco Vargas, and Saturday Luis Ortiz vs. Bryant Jennings.

Although 2015 has not been a truly stellar year for Golden Boy, with big losses coming from Lucas Matthysse to Viktor Postol and David Lemieux to Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.
Oscar continues to do for the most part what fans want. Bring the best possible fights to the table. Saturday night at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York Golden Boy added another future Cash Cow to go along with Canelo as Luis Ortiz made a huge statement in knocking out Bryant Jennings to become a definite force in the Heavyweight division. As a fight fan I only see a bright future for Golden Boy as De La Hoya has now done what it takes for the second year in a row to be promoter of the year.

The Los Angeles-based Golden Boy Promotions was established in 2002 by 10-time world champion in six divisions Oscar De La Hoya, the first Hispanic to own a national boxing promotional company. Golden Boy Promotions is one of boxing’s most active and respected promoters, presenting shows in packed venues around the world and has worked with networks such as HBO, HBO Latino, Estrella TV, ESPN, TeleFutura, FOX Sports 1, FOX Deportes, Televisa and TV Azteca.
