WBO Light Flyweight Champion, Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, 38-1-4, 22 KO’s is not only a boxing legend in his island country of the Philippines, but he also the longest reigning Filipino World Champion. Nietes looked to keep that streak alive Saturday night under the stars at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California. Nietes took on the tough Mexican veteran and former WBC Light Flyweight Champion, Edgar Sosa, 52-9, 30 KO’s for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Flyweight Title. Nietes who hasn’t lost a fight since 2004, looked to impress boxing fans in his Flyweight debut, as ALA Boxing Promotions brought a night of action with their fight card labeled “Pinoy Pride.”

Nietes looked great in his new weight class as he controlled the tempo of the fight from bell to bell. The 34 year old pugilist from Bacolod province in the Philippines gave Sosa a boxing clinic. Nietes landed shots at will and hurt Sosa several times in the fight with his powerful left hook. The veteran Mexican Sosa looked lost against Nietes and never could find his comfort zone. After 12 rounds of championship boxing all three judges scored it 120-108 in favor of the Filipino Nietes. Nietes now hopes to fight for the recently vacated WBO or WBA title which was vacated early this week by Champion Juan “El Gallo” Estrada.

In the Co-main event WBO Asian Pacific Bantamweight Champion, “King” Arthur Villanueva, 30-1, 16 KO’s took on Juan Jimenez, 22-11, 15 KO’s in a highly anticipated rematch. “King” Arthur wasted no time to make his statement as he came out landing powerful shots on his Mexican opponent. In the 2nd round Villanueva caught Jimenez with a devastating hook knocking him out at the 2:20 mark of the round. The first match between Villanueva and Jimenez ended in a controversial stoppage as a headbutt knocked Jimenez out cold and Referee Dan Nietes didn’t see the clash of heads. The referee counted out Jimenez to the dismay of his corner, giving Villanueva a KO victory. With tonight’s win Villanueva becomes the #1 WBO ranked fighter and looks to battle a top ranked bantamweight in the spring of 2017.

Also on the card at the Stubhub Center is highly touted and undefeated WBO International Featherweight Champion Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo, 15-0, 11 KO’s. Magsayo was supposed to be fighting prospect Ruben Garcia, but Garcia pulled out due to an injury last Saturday. Magsayo instead took on Ramiro “Zurdo” Robles, 13-5-1, 8 KO’s. Robles a 23 year old southpaw from Guanajuato, Mexico. Robles battled tough for all 12 rounds against Magsayo. Magsayo landed a huge combination in the 2nd flooring Robles. Robles beat the count and held his ground the rest of the fight. Magsayo showed great ring generalship and looked impressive throughout the fight. After 12 the judges scored it 118-108, 120-106, 119-107 all in favor of the undefeated Magsayo.
