Former unified light welterweight champion and current WBC world welterweight titlist Danny “Swift” Garcia, 32-0, 18 KO’s, is slated to make the first defense of his title November 12th in his home town of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Garcia made his debut at 147 pounds on August 1st 2015, against former two division champion Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi, 36-7, 7 KO’s, from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Malignaggi was well past his prime and was coming off of a brutal fourth round knockout loss to Shawn “Showtime” Porter, 26-2, 16 KO’s, for his IBF welterweight title. Garcia dominated the fight as expected, and referee Arthur Mercante, JR. called a stop to the fight in the ninth round. Garcia went on to face another former two division champion in Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, 33-5, 18 KO’s, for the vacant WBC world welterweight title. Guerrero was very aggressive as he always is, but Garcia controlled the fight and ultimately won a unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring it 116-112 in his favor.

An opponent has yet to be announced, but there has been no shortage of rumors. He was reportedly offered a fight with Manny Pacquiao, 58-6-2, 38 KO’s, for November 5th, but he declined the offer, and Pacquiao is now fighting WBO world welterweight champion Jessie Vargas, 27-1, 10 KO’s, instead.

It was then rumored that a fight with former welterweight champion Andre Berto, 31-4, 24 KO’s, who is ranked #2 in the world by the WBC, was in the works. This fell through however, when Garcia was said to be facing John Molina, JR., 29-6, 23 KO’s, instead. Berto and Garcia exchanged in a war of words on social media after Berto accused Garcia of ducking him, but the bout with Molina, JR. never materialized either.

According to Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, Garcia’s team attempted to secure a fight with British welterweight Sam Eggington, 18-3, 10 KO’s. Eggington is not a legitimate opponent for title defense, and most boxing fans were thankful that negotiations fell through. Hearn turned it down after Garcia’s team refused to offer anything north of 125,000.

Now, most recently, Garcia has made a five figure offer to former champion Kermit Cintron, 38-5-2, 29 KO’s, which was turned down. Cintron was once one of the most feared welterweights in the world. He held the IBF welterweight title and challenged for a light middleweight title, but came up short as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 48-1-1, 34 KO’s, stopped him in the fifth round. Since that fight, he has had one draw, and five straight wins, but it was against less than elite competition. He is now 37 years old and looking to make one more run at a championship. But at this point in his career, it would not be a legitimate world title defense for “DSG”.
