Judge Sentences Derek Chauvin to 22 ½ Years For Murder Of George Floyd – Breaking News
Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22-and-half years in prison. This afternoon, Judge Peter Cahill spoke to the courtroom explaining his decision and giving his condolences to George Floyd’s family before announcing Chauvin’s sentence.
Chauvin also lifted his silence and addressed Floyd’s family for the first time. “I want to give my condolences to Floyd family, there’s going to be some other information in the future that would be of interest and I hope things will give you some peace of mind,” Chauvin said.
Hours before the ruling, the court denied the defense team’s request for a new trial or for a hearing on jury misconduct. In April, Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter following an emotional and intense trial that was watched nationwide.
The sentence will result into Chauvin serving 15 years with time served being credited and if he maintains good behavior. Chauvin, 45, will be released when he is 60 years old. He will also have to register as a predatory offender and will not be allowed to own any firearms. He will also have to pay the Minnesota Department of Corrections $78 out of his prison wages.
The former Minneapolis officer was sentenced on the most serious charge, the judge also found aggravating factors including abuse of authority for why Chauvin must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence behind bars.
Chauvin is widely expected to appeal his sentence. He is also looking at facing trial on federal civil rights charges, along with the other three officers who were involved with Floyd’s murder and are still awaiting their trials this upcoming August.
