Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld Dies at Age 88 – World News
Donald Rumsfeld, who served as Secretary of Defense under Gerald Ford from 1975-1977 and again under George W. Bush from 2001-2006 passed away on June 29,2021, at his home in Taos, New Mexico. No cause of death was disclosed. He was 88.
Rumsfeld was a 1954 graduate of Princeton with a degree in political science. He served in the United States Navy for three years (1954-1957) as a naval aviator and flight instructor.
In addition to his position as Secretary of Defense, Rumsfeld’s political career includes serving as Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1963-1969, 3RD Director of Economic Opportunity under Richard Nixon from 1969-1970, Counselor to the President under Nixon from 1970-1971, Director of Cost of Living Council under Nixon from 1971-1973, United States Ambassador to NATO under Nixon from 1973-1974, and White House Chief of Staff under Gerald Ford from 1974-1975.
Rumsfeld’s honors and awards include The Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977), Woodrow Wilson Medal by Princeton University (1985), Ronald Reagan Freedom Award (2003), the Gerald Ford Medal presented by Gerald Ford and the Ford Foundation (2004), and Union League of Philadelphia Gold Medal for Citizenship (2006), among many others.
