Carl Froch Vs Glen Johnson: Super Middleweight Boxing Showdown Saturday Night
Carl “the Cobra” Froch, 27-1, 20 KO’s, is looking to go head to head with Showtime Super Six tournament finalist, Andre Ward, but first things first, he must get beyond ring veteran, Glen Johnson, 51-14-2, 35 KO’s.
Froch was an unknown to the American audience, until he stepped into the ring with former middleweight champion, Jermain Taylor in 2009, defending his WBC Super Middleweight Title. A come from behind final second knockout of Taylor put Froch on the map. He won when he needed to win.
He would be chosen to participate in the Super Six tournament and face the awkward Andre Dirrell in his first outing, eking by with an ugly split decision win. He would lose his next outing to the tough former champion, Mikkel Kessler via unanimous decision, but would rebound nicely with a dominant performance over Arthur Abraham. Froch is a very tough and cocky fighter with the WBC title around his waist.
Glen Johnson goes by the name “The Road Warrior” and he is just that. He will fight anyone, anywhere, anytime, but at 42, what does he have left. He came into the tournament as a replacement and knocked out Allan Green to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Johnson has faced a lot of great fighters, including Roy Jones, JR., Bernard Hopkins, Chad Dawson, Tavoris Cloud, Antonio Tarver, and Clinton Woods, but his current track record of 4-3, 3 KO’s, does not appear to support the large group that insist he will win Saturday night.
Johnson is very strong at 168 pounds, aggressive, and has a great chin, but diminished reflexes will hurt him against Froch. Expect Froch to use his skills and the uppercut to control the old warrior en route to a decision win. He may have some scares along the way, but Froch is a guy that has been in with big punchers like Taylor, Abraham, Kessler, and Jean Pascal, and he’s held up well. He will be able to withstand the incoming from Johnson.
