The British and Commonwealth lightweight title fight between Gavin Gwynne and Craig Woodruff in Grays, Essex and live on Channel Five ended in a draw where Gwynne retained his title as a result. It was a great fight that did ebb and flow. It could have gone either way would be the headline that could have been written but Woodruff’s people were upset at the result. A draw was, however, fair – a rematch would be fairer!

The big male trilogy fight ended with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez taking a points win over Gennady Golovkin in Las Vegas. Golovkin looked his age, and the fight did not ignite in the way we had all hoped. This was not a disputed win, though the scorecards were closer than most thought were accurate. Canelo will now go into his rematch with Dmitry Bivol with some confidence. GGG got called out by Chris Eubank Jr…

In Montreal the NABF heavyweight title fight saw Arslanbek Makhmudov and former world titlist, Carlos Takam square off with Makhmudov managing a convincing points win. Makhmudov is still unbeaten, but I have to wonder where next as many of the fringe heavyweights are busy sorting their next fights and nobody is quoting his name… But he should be in the mix now…

The British middleweight title fight between Denzel Bentley and Marcus Morrison in York Hall saw Bentley defend his British title by stopping Morrison in 4 rounds. Bentley was in tremendous form and perhaps another defense before moving up to European level or above beckons.

In the Civic Hall, Grays, Essex, light middleweight Lyndon Arthur stopped Walter Gabriel Sequira in 6 rounds.

In Las Vegas the WBC super flyweight title went to Jesse Rodriguez Franco after a points win against Israel Gonzalez, the middleweight WBC international strap saw Austin Williams drop Kieron Conway before taking the 10 round win on points whilst the IBF North American title was settled between Ali Akhmedov and Gabriel Rosado as Akhmedov took every round.

We have the interim WBO heavyweight title fight between Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker in Manchester headlining a BT Sport/ Queensberry bill. This is both fascinating and an opportunity to change the heavyweight landscape. With Daniel Dubois, who was beaten by Joyce, now the “regular” WBA champion, this interim title may just provide some leverage for the winner. For what? Who knows. I have always thought Joyce was a little one dimensional, but he has an engine that never sleeps. Parker, as a former champion, has the experience, and I reckon that may see him edge it.

In New Jersey, the unification super featherweight title fight for the WBC and WBO titles is between Shakur Stevenson and Robson Conceicao. Stevenson should win this with ease, surely? Conceicao is not a name that causes much fear and though the Mexican is tall and capable, Stevenson is widely favored. I cannot see an alternative ending than Stevenson taking the win comfortably.

In Manchester, BT Sport and Queensberry deliver the return of Amanda Serrano against Sarah Mahfoud for the IBF, IBO, WBC and WBO titles at featherweight. With Serrano’s fight on the Jake Paul versus the world undercard having fallen through Serrano, rightly described as boxing royalty has made the trip across and should return with her titles intact!

Again, in Manchester, England, the IBO, WBA unification fight at super welterweight is between Hannah Rankin and Terri Harper. This has a bit of spice attached and Harper has jumped three weight divisions to meet Rankin. The winner may go on to a domestic unification fight against Natasha Jonas at this weight which would be yet another massive female fight night to add to so many others and this does intrigue. As a Scot I should fancy Rankin to win but I reckon that Harper, who lost her super featherweight title to Alicia Baumgardner has all the reasons in the world to get back to world level with those belts around her waist.
