“Harry Potter” Star Robbie Coltrane Dies at 72 – Entertainment News

Actor Robbie Coltrane, known to “Harry Potter” fans for playing the beloved Hagrid, passed away October 14, 2022, at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland. No cause of death was given, but it was reported that the actor had been in ill health for the past two years. He was 72.

Coltrane’s costar, “Harry Potter” himself Daniel Radcliffe, reflected on his relationship with Coltrane saying how he was “incredibly lucky” to have worked with him and was “one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set.”

Robbie Coltrane was born Anthony Robert McMillan on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, Scotland. He started his career in his early twenties working in theatre. Coltrane had some comedic skills that would land him a role in the series THE COMIC STRIP PRESENTS (1982-2012), as well as the comedy sketch show ALFRESCO (1983-1984). Coltrane gained international fame when he was cast as Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, appearing in all eight feature films: HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE (2001), HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS (2002), HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (2004), HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (2005), HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX (2007), HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (2009), and HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PARTS 1 and 2 (2010 & 2011). Coltrane’s additional film and TV credits include FLASH GORDON (1980), ARE YOU BEING SERVED (1972-1985), KRULL (1983), NATIONAL LAMPOON’S EUROPEAN VACATION (1985), NUNS ON THE RUN (1990), THE ADVENTURES OF HUCK FINN (1993), GOLDENEYE (1995), MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE (1999), ALICE IN WONDERLAND (1999), THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999), FROM HELL (2001), VAN HELSING (2004), FRASIER (1993-2004), OCEAN’S TWELVE (2004), THE TALE OF DESPERAUX (2008), ARTHUR CHRISTMAS (2011), BRAVE (2012), GREAT EXPECTATIONS (2012), LEGO DIMENSONS (2015) and NATIONAL TREASURE (2016).
