Salzburg Marionette Theatre Performs “The Sound of Music” – Review

Review by Karen Beishuizen

Last Friday, 11 July, in Salzburg, Austria, I saw the most enchanting thing I have ever seen in my life:

“The Sound of Music” in a marionette performance.

The voices, the moves, the singing, the dancing: it was just breathtaking and absolutely stunning to watch.

When Maria and Captain Von Trapp dance and sing “The Sound of Music” together, I got all choked up and had tears running down my cheeks in the dark.

Someone at the theatre told me it takes a study of 6 years before you can call yourself a professional puppeteer.

Every scene, the build-up to a song, the humor, you could just tell that the puppeteers, who were in charge of the strings, were having fun tonight!

The puppets were hopping and doing tumbles on stage and at one point you saw the legs of a real human sweeping the stage and the audience burst out in laughing.

The costumes, the props, set design: It was perfect. Like human theatre the puppets changed clothes a few times and I would love to know how that is done so quickly!

Mother Abbess was a real person dressed as a nun sitting on the side of the stage during the abbey scenes.

At the end the Captain sang “Edelweiss” and I completely lost it and a waterfall of tears poured down my face.

Before it was all over, a curtain above the stage opened and you saw the puppeteers responsible for the performance and the audience awarded them with a standing ovation. They so deserved it.

I’m just in love with the marionette performance I watched: I highly recommend to see it when you are in Salzburg!
