By Karen Beishuizen

Canadian First Nations actor Graham Greene, who opened doors for Indigenous actors in Hollywood, died September 1. He was 73.

He made his big screen debut in 1983 in the movie “Running Brave”.

Greene’s big breakthrough came when Kevin Costner cast him as Kicking Bird (Ziŋtká Nagwáka) in his 1990 Western “Dances with Wolves”.

The movie received 12 Academy Award nominations — including one for Greene as Best Supporting Actor — and won seven, including Best Picture.

It launched Greene’s Hollywood career.

He went on to appear in movies like “Maverick”, “Die Hard with a Vengeance”, “The Green Mile”, “Thunderheart”, “Transamerica” and one of my favorite movies “Wind River” with Jeremy Renner.

Graham Greene was born on June 22, 1952 in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations Reserve.

He worked till the end and has one upcoming movie in the can: “Ice Fall” starring Joel Kinnaman.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore; daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene; and grandson Tarlo.

Ringside Report sends their condolences to The Greene Family in their time of grief.
