Jonathon Cepeda, 15-1, 13 KO’s stopped Lester Gonzalez, 12-15-4, 6 KO’s at 1:57 of the fifth round. The bout was exciting with heavy blows landed by both opponents. It was evenly matched for a while until Gonzalez turned up the heat and started pummeling Cepeda into submission.
Edwin Reyes, 5-0, 4 KO’s stopped Tyrone Stewart, 3-3 was outmatched from the beginning by home town hero, Reyes. Reyes stopped Stewart at 40 seconds of the second round.
Mike Sawyer, 6-3, 3 KO’s who is also a finance graduate, gave Nate Chambers, 0-2 the business end of a whole stack of numbers. The number of punches it took to make Chambers hit the canvas and give Sawyer a TKO victory at 1:07 of the first round.
Gerome Quigley, 5-0, 4 KO’s stopped Cedric Coney, 3-2 at 2:57 of the first round. It seems they need to learn how to fight better down south. Quigley out of the William Joppy camp hit Coney so hard that when he did get up from the canvas, he did a Roberto Duran impression of shaking his head and declaring, “No Mas”.
The main event was for the Virginia Super Lightweight belt and was between Yurii Polishuk, 6-1-1, 2 KO’s against Ben Olinga, 1-9. The bout went the full six round with Polishuk winning by 60-54 and 59-55 (twice). There were moments in the fight where Yurii showed slippery moves using his head and body to make Olinga miss with ease. Yurii delivered some crushing body blows that had Olinga in pain several times, but he could not put him away. One thing is for sure, he showed Olinga why he was favored in the fight and why he came away with the belt.
