Last night, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather, JR., 48-0 26 KO’s, proved his greatness in dominating Manny Pacquiao, 57-6-2 38 KO’s, in a fight that was supposed to be the toughest of his career.

The fight did not live up to its billing as “The Fight of the Century” because Mayweather was just too good to make this fight exciting. Never has a gulf in class between the two best fighters on earth been so large. At times, Mayweather made the Filipino dynamo look like a sloppy off balanced amateur on his way to winning a lopsided twelve round decision.

Before the fight, Pacquiao’s longtime trainer Freddie Roach claimed they knew how to neutralize Floyd’s straight right hand but Manny was a sucker for the big right the entire night, getting his head snapped back repeatedly. It was target practice for Mayweather, who was never in trouble at any point during the fight. He put on a boxing clinic, pushed Pacquiao backwards, out sped, out punched and outclassed Pacquiao in every facet of the game. The fight was not close and showed that Mayweather is clearly a level above when it comes to boxing greatness. Manny Pacquiao should count himself lucky that he was in against this aged and slightly diminished version of Mayweather because, just like his trainer Freddie Roach said, five years ago a prime Mayweather would have had an even bigger advantage.

In a positive side note, referee Kenny Bayless did a great job of not getting overly involved and the judging was fair by all accounts, avoiding a huge potential black eye for the sport.

Despite giving fans the fight they begged for and then easily winning it by using a superior skill set that has taken over twenty years of hard work to hone, Mayweather is one of those fighters that’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. Already, irrational fans that don’t understand the sport are taking to social media to discredit the win in pathetically bitter fashion. They’re saying Mayweather “ran” when he did nothing of the sort and was the more active puncher, they’re saying he hugged when there were few clinches, some completely biased fans are saying Pacquiao got robbed when he won three rounds at best! Could you imagine if Mayweather knocked Manny out?

They’d be saying Mayweather was on steroids, despite the well known random drug testing implemented for this fight. These people see what they want to see and refuse to give Mayweather the credit he deserves no matter what he does, even after giving fans the fight they asked for. They would accept nothing but a Mayweather loss and they’re bitter that they were wrong once again. It’s unbelievable and unheard of, Mayweather just cannot get the respect he deserves. Before the fight, social media was full of “Pacquiao will kill the chicken”, after the fight, these same fair weathered fans have either disappeared or changed their tune to “Mayweather ran”, or “Pac didn’t try, fight was fixed”. They would only be happy if Mayweather stuck his head out and allowed Pacquiao to repeatedly hit him on the chin, anything less is deemed running by these fans of little knowledge. You want to see real running in a ring? Watch Chris Algieri versus Pacquiao, what Mayweather did was clinical precision and sweet science executed in its finest form. If he were a humble white man he would be the most beloved athlete in America.

By easily whooping the great Manny Pacquiao in a fight that was supposed to be his toughest to date, Mayweather stamped his place in history as the best fighter since Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran, and one of the top twenty greatest fighters who ever lived. Mayweather has a way of negating opponent’s weapons to the point that it looks like they aren’t trying, and even the mighty Manny Pacquiao was no different. Floyd Mayweather, JR. now moves to 48-0 with only one fight remaining on his contract with Showtime. By beating Pacquiao he now incredibly holds the WBA, the WBC and the WBO belts at welterweight along with the WBC and WBA belts at junior middleweight! According to Mayweather he will fight in September and then retire tied with Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0. Who his opponent will be is anyone’s guess and it doesn’t really matter as his legacy is sealed with this win. The September fight will simply be a farewell win for the greatest fighter of our time. As for Pacquiao, he should take some time off and consider retiring after an all time great career as a first ballot hall of famer with nothing left to prove. In all likelihood, the great Manny Pacquiao will not want to go out with a loss so expect him back in 2016 for one final fight against a soft touch so he can ride off into the sunset with a farewell win.

Floyd deserves all the credit in the world for this fantastic win and proving that a skilled technician trumps a power punching dynamo. Once again in the squared circle brain has won over brawn.
