I love this fight. It’s not that different from Gennady Golovkin against David Lemieux in that it will be action packed. There are so much fireworks in this fight and so much on the line for both fighters. This is a fight between two champions which in a sense, is a cross roads fight. Alvarez has a tremendous fan base but his stock was damaged by his loss to Floyd Mayweather, JR. Cotto has been on the downside of his career for a while and has hung in there with a well timed and well positioned shot at Martinez who after being in the same gym as him while preparing for his title defencs against Cotto, it was easy to see his struggles with walking around let alone fighting for 12 championship rounds.

Cotto is the middleweight champion but in my opinion Alvarez is the favorite in this fight. The catch weight of 154 makes this a comfortable weight for both and I don’t see that as an issue relevant to the outcome of the fight. Cotto is hanging onto a career that should land him in the IBHOF one day or as soon as he is eligible. But in my opinion, just hanging on. Alvarez has to win this fight in dynamic fashion to help erase the memory we all have of his one sided loss to Floyd. With a win in a clean knockout result for Alvarez [which is what I forsee] Alvarez will add to the three wins he has to date against very qualified, championship caliber, but not as well known fighters as Cotto since the loss.

The fight itself should be a slugfest. There is no “winning” in a decision for Alvarez. There is no concept of a “win” by decision by Cotto as far as I can see. Boxing has a way to make the most logical not happen. The least logical, to happen. I don’t see that in this fight. As a comparison to Golokvin- Lemeiux, you have a young lion stepping up in class in Lemeiux against a feared and established young champion. In Cotto-Alvarez you have the opposite spectrum being an aging champion [Cotto] trying to extend his glory days verses Lemieux who is trying to establish his time as now.

Technically you will have both fighters moving forward for different reasons. Cotto as this is his best chance to win. Alvarez as this is his only option to win back the fan base he lost and that of his detractors. There will be furious exchanges and knockout intentions from the opening bell and this fight has the potential to be a fight of the year candidate as well [similar to the feeling many have of “GGG”-Lemeiux].

I just see Alvarez as one step faster. One step, maybe two, younger, his chin that much less worn and his durability otherwise as that much more intact. Cotto has shown vulnerability in the last few years. Martinez didn’t have the ability at the stage of his career when they fought to expose Cotto’s vulnerability, but Alvarez does. Alvarez will land cleaner punches. Alvarez will land harder punches and when Cotto lands I expect Alvarez to withstand the punches better than Cotto.
The old axiom comes to mind again, when a puncher fights a puncher, besides guaranteed explosive action, the man with the best chin wins……I give that at this point to Alvarez . When two punchers step in the ring, ANYTHING can happen and this is THAT kind of fight.

Cotto is live, real and has a high level punchers chance. If I had to put money down it would be on Alvarez, but it would not be a complete upset if Cotto landed that shot and ended it all. A great fight and one I am excited to see. When it comes to action, this fight is right up there with what anticipation there is that “GGG”-Lemeiux has fight of the year potential….

That may be the biggest question here, which fight will live up to the high expectations there is for both? That I couldn’t bet on as they are both equally well matched and well timed on opponent ends of a career of one of the participants in each match. Lots will be shown in these two fights and I will be on the edge of my seat ready to enjoy them both.
