NFL Week 1 Wrap Up & Highlights

NFLheaderBy Jay “Jawz” Crum

Week 1 is in the books but not after leaving fans scratching their heads. A notable problem around the league was the new ruling on PAT placements. Due to a rule change in the off season point after attempts has gone from a 17 yd kick to a 32 yd attempt. Sunday brought about a few missed attempts.

Week one saw a lot of ups and downs. A few notable surprises were the outstanding rookie debut of Titans QB Marcus Mariota. Mariota the 2nd overall pick of the 2015 draft by the Tennessee Titans started his NFL career looking like a seasoned all-pro. Mariota led the Titans with 4 passing touch downs (13-16, 209 yds) in a good old fashioned beat down of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 42-14. Mariota out played the 1st overall draft pick of the 2015 draft Tampa Bay QB Jameis Winston. Winston threw for 16-33, 210 yds, 2 td’s, 2 int’s.

St. Louis Rams look tough in dismantling the Seahawks 34-31 in overtime. Story of the game was the Rams special teams and Defense. The Rams defense sacke Seahawks QB Russell Wilson 6 times and kept Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch to 73 yards rushing.

Buffalo Bills shock the Colts 27-14. 5th year Bills QB Tyrod Taylor drove the truck right over Andrew Luck and the Colts. The Bills welcome in the era of new head coach Rex Ryan with an opening season win.

Romo pulls a rabbit out of the hat to bring the Dallas Cowboys back from behind to beat the NY Giants 27-26 with a TD throw to TE Jason Witten with 1:27 left in the 4th quarter. But it was not all good news for the Cowboys. Cowboys WR Dez Bryant left the game with a foot injury that was later revealed as a broken foot. Bryant underwent surgery Monday morning having a pin placed in his foot. Bryant is expected to be out 5-6 weeks.

New England looks like the team to beat again. Tom Brady came back from his near 4 game suspension in a bad mood, and the poor Steelers had to take his wrath. Brady torched the Steelers for 288 yards and 4 passing touchdowns. 3 of Brady’s touch downs were caught by All-World TE Rob Gronkowski. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger threw for 351 yards and 1 TD, but it was not enough to keep up with the Pats. New England 28 Pittsburgh 21.
