Koki Kameda: Can He Win A World Title In A Fourth Weight Class?
By “The Commissioner” Alan J. Kindred
On October 16th, this Friday night on Spike TV, boxing fans have a chance to witness some history, when 28 year old 3 division world champion Koki Kameda, 33-1, 18 KO’s, brother of former world champions Tomoki and Daiki Kameda, will attempt to win a world title in his 4th weight class, against countryman Kohei Kono, 30-8-1, 13 KO’s. Koki would be the first fighter ever from Japan to do accomplish this feat of winning world titles in 4 different weight classes.
In August of 2006, in just his 12th fight and at only 19 years of age, Koki won his first world title against Juan Landaeta (23-3-1, 18 KO’s at the time) at 108 pounds, for the WBA Light Flyweight world title. In November of 2009 he would win a world title at 112 pounds, beating Daisuke Naito (35-2-3, 22 KO’s at the time) for the WBC Flyweight world title. He would lose that title in his only defeat to date, to probably future International Boxing Hall of Famer Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (74-3-1, 38 KO’s at the time), in a hotly contested, and some say controversial, close majority decision loss. Because of the nature of this controversial loss, Koki’s supporters insist in reality he is still an undefeated fighter. Koki would then move up to Bantamweight and win his 3rd division world title in December of 2010 against Alexander Munoz (35-3, 27 KO’s at the time). By defeating Munoz, Koki would add the WBA Bantamweight world title to his collection and was a 3 division champion having just turned 24 years old. Over the next few years he would rattle off 8 defenses of that title, giving him an overall record of 12-1, 2 KO’s in world title bouts.
After a batch of inactivity, likely caused by controversy surrounding his family in Japan, Koki Komeda is back and has dropped down to 115 pounds in an attempt to win a world title in his 4th weight class. The WBA Super Flyweight world champion Kohei Kono will be doing his best to thwart Koki’s grand opportunity. With Koki’s younger brother Tomoki getting most of the limelight as of late, he is eager to show who the best of the Kameda brothers actually is. Tune in this Friday night on Spike TV to see if Koki Kameda can pull of this historic defeat of winning world titles in 4 weight classes.
