Kohei Kono Retains Title Against Koki Kameda – Shocking Boxing News
In a war, WBA super flyweight champion Kohei Kono (31-8-1, 13 KOs) retained his title by unanimous twelve round decision and repelled the attempt of Koki Kameda (33-2, 18 KOs) to became the first Japanese fighter to win a world title in four weight divisions on Friday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. Kono dropped Kameda in round two. Then Kameda was deducted twice for low blows in round three. Referee Celestino Ruiz stopped the action in round seven and threatened to disqualify the next fighter to commit a foul. He was told not to stop the fight by an official after the round. Both fighters headhunted after that. Kong was deducted a point in round nine for pushing down Kameda’s head. In the end, Kono won by scores of 115-107, 116-108, 113-111.
In a light heavyweight slugfest, WBA #2, WBC #5, IBF #5, WBO #5 rated Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) hammered out a twelve round unanimous decision over former WBO champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs). It was a competitive fight throughout. Cleverly fought the late rounds with a broken nose. Scores were 115-113, 116-112, 116-112. Fonfara is now 14-0 at the UIC Pavilion.
