Kudos to Willis Meehan

Willis Meehan is an undefeated Heavyweight fighter from New Zealand. On October 21st, he was paired against a guy by the name of Leamy Tato, who was a last minute replacement. The fight was a mismatch from the start and by the end of the first round Tato was basically out on his feet. It should have been stopped right then and there.
In the second, Meehan continued to pummel a defenseless Tato while the referee just stood and watched. Ultimately, Meehan himself stopped punching, turned to the referee and yelled: “Stop the f***in fight!” This idiot finally realized that he had a job to do and waived the fight off. Meehan then put his arm around Tato and guided him to his corner. What a terrific act of sportsmanship and compassion!

A James “Quick” Tillis Story

I was thinking about the first time I saw James “Quick” Tillis fight. It was a Saturday night in October 1981. I was a young kid who had recently been turned on to boxing. Living in Massachusetts of course one of my favorite fighters was Marvelous Marvin Hagler. That night, he was fighting Mustafa Hamsho and Quick was challenging Mike Weaver for the WBA Heavyweight Title on HBO.

I was staying with my grandmother at the time and after some serious begging and cajoling on my part she allowed me to stay up and watch the fights. Marvelous Marvin carved up Hamsho like a roast turkey. Then came the main event: Weaver vs Quick. What I remember most vividly is something that happened between rounds. HBO was putting cameras and microphones in the corners, which I believe was a very new concept at the time. These caught Angelo Dundee launching a series of f-bombs in Quick’s corner. At first, I giggled but quickly realized I might be in hot water.
See my grandmother was old school Catholic and did not allow swearing in the house (not even a hell or a damn). If she heard that, the fight would be over for me. Luckily she didn’t. For the remainder of the fight, I would run over to the TV between rounds and turn the volume down with my ear to the speaker. In the end, I scored the fight 8-7 in rounds for Weaver. Sorry Quick!

RSR Forum Topic of the Week

Apparently Adrien Broner has now been promoted by the WBA to Super Champion status at 140. With Broner now promoted to Super Champion, Interim champion Jose Benavides JR will face Michelle Di Rocco for the WBA JR. Welterweight championship. In other boxing news, the WBA has decreed that Mighty Mouse will face “Bam” Rubble for the newly created Interim Super Duper Deluxe Jr. Paper-Mache Weight Championship.

NFL Thought of the Week – The Odious AFC South

What a dumpster fire! The Indianapolis Colts, a trendy Super Bowl pick prior to the season, lead the division with a record of 3-5. The Colts are an abysmal 0-5 outside of the division. It’s entirely possible that a record of 7-9 or even 6-10 will be enough to win the AFC South. If that happens, it will be the third time in the past six seasons that a team with a losing record has “earned” a playoff berth and the right to host a home playoff game. The NFL really needs to do something to address this. The playoffs should be about rewarding excellence, not mediocrity. Teams with losing records simply do not belong in the playoffs, period!

Anyway, that it for now. I’ll offer my thoughts on the upcoming Cotto-Canelo matchup next week.
