He might be retired from the ring, but Floyd’s mouth is still working overtime. In his most recent rant, Floyd scolded Ring Magazine for having Andre Ward as the fourth ranked pound for pound fighter behind Roman Gonzalez, Sergey Kovalev and Gennady Golovkin respectively. He then went on to criticize fans of UFC fighter Connor McGregor who praise him for trash talking, but never gave Floyd the same reaction.

It’s not that Mayweather, JR. is wrong in his claim that there is racism in boxing. Floyd is just doing what he does best and that is draw controversy to himself. That’s how he has always sold his fights. Floyd made a career out of creating negative attention toward himself in order to get people to focus on him. When fans started paying to see him lose, that’s when he made his most money. These recent statements are probably an indicator that Floyd may even be planning a comeback fight.

In regards to his actual arguments, there isn’t really any merit. Let’s not forget that before Ring Magazine updated it’s pound for pound list, the number one fighter was Floyd Mayweather, JR.! Andre Ward is ranked number four, but he was on a two year hiatus before that. To be ranked fourth after that long of a lay off and one fight against an unranked fighter is quite generous of Ring Magazine.

Mayweather, JR. said that fans didn’t appreciate him when he talked trash and he is 100% correct. That is what he wanted all along! Floyd doesn’t mind being the bad guy because it pays quite well. The disdain fans showed for him should be a testament for how well he marketed himself. For the sake of arguing fairness, let’s look at the dollars here. In McGregor’s most recent and most hyped fight against undefeated UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, he made $500,000. In Floyd’s super fight alone against Pacquiao, He made roughly $220 million. If that’s the most McGregor expects to make in a fight, he would have to stay busy with five fights a year for 88 years to make what Floyd made in one fight. In Mayweather, JR.’s most recent fight against Andre Berto that was considered a box office dud, He still made $32 million. McGregor would have to fight 64 times to even match that.

If there is racism in boxing, it certainly hasn’t stopped Mayweather, JR. from making his bones. More power to him. He knows how to make money in this business and he knows how to sell himself.
