Timothy Bradley Vs Devon Alexander: The Predictions

By Mike “Rubber Warrior” Plunkett

This is it fight fans, this weekend’s pivotal light welterweight unification clash between WBO champion Timothy Bradley and WBC kingpin Devon Alexander is not only a fantastic way to kick off boxing for 2011, it is arguably as good as it gets from a matchmaking and peak quotient perspective. At 26-0, 11 KO’s “Desert Storm” has been a world champion for three years; in that time displaying the drive, energy and skill that has set him apart as a top-flight first class competitor. For his part, “Alexander the Great”, 21-0, 13 KO’s won his championship last year by finessing the industrial strength tough Juan Urango into a highlight reel combination, flattening the otherwise durable Colombian and sending notice to the boxing world that top honors at 140 were very much open to debate.

This will be far more than a contest for championship belts. It is the unlikely clash between two in-their-prime leather-swapping undefeated upstarts fueled by a burning desire to rule the roost and of equal and undeniable luster. It will start off as a contest of skill and very likely turn into a confrontation of wills. Anything can happen in this one, and for the hardcore fan of boxing this clash is the goods. Ringside Report’s team of writers offer their expert opinions on the outcome:

 Marc Anthony

My pick is Timothy Bradley. I think Timothy can exploit the holes that Devon Alexander showed in his last fight. I also believe that he will look to slow him down with volume hard shots and possibly stop him to make a statement.

Gina L. Caliboso

I’ve followed both Alexander and Bradley in the light welterweight division. Both fighters have a tremendous amount to win and lose in this fight.  Bradley is not as a relaxed fighter as he can be.  I think he doesn’t have the same hand speed as Alexander.  Bradley, however, is strong and well-conditioned so I don’t see a KO victory for either fighter.  As for Alexander, I like his power combinations and hand speed. Prediction: Devon Alexander by 12-round unanimous decision.

Timothy Bradley is rock solid and gives anyone a challenging fight at 140 pounds if he doesn’t wipe the floor with them.  However for this fight I have to go with the explosive Devon Alexander due to his advantages in mobility, speed, and power.  This should be a great battle between two supremely skilled fighters and both men will have their moments.  Neither will leave anything in the ring and Alexander will walk away with a split decision.  This is the best fight that HBO has televised in a while.

Idris “Drees” Newton

Unless Devon Alexander can knock Timothy Bradley down or out early, which isn’t likely as Alexander does not possess Kendall Holt kind of power, I see Bradley taking over this fight late and winning by unanimous decision. Alexander tires late and Bradley never tires.

Sean Farrell

The hungrier Devon Alexander wins this fight, he will outwork Bradley but Bradley has the power to end it. Devon Alexander by 12 round unanimous

“Bad” Brad Berkwitt

I am hoping this fight turns out as good as it looks on paper. With that said, a close one, but Bradley winning by a unanimous decision in the range of 115-113.

Ben Bieker

I pick Devon Alexander because I believe that his power will be the deciding factor between two fighters who are relatively even in terms of ability. Also, while they have a similar amount of stoppages Devon has been racking them up as of late having 9 stoppages in his last 13 fights.

Donald Stewart

For me it’ll be Timothy Bradley – early stoppage before round seven…

Damien Norman

Timothy Bradley will edge this but will probably get a unanimous decision.

Joe Wilson

This should be a very entertaining fight. Neither fighter is a knockout artist, however they are both sitting at top spot of the 140lb competition. What both undefeated fighters bring to the ring is a true will to win. If Bradley has put in the hard work with enough southpaws during training camp, I have him winning this by a close decision. Bradley by 12-round decision.

For me this is one heck of a hard pick. RSR Feature Writer Marc Anthony’s recent interview with Kerry Davis really put things into perspective when Davis stated “The popular wisdom is that Devon may have a little bit more skill and Bradley may have a little bit more will. But one of the things that I noticed watching their past fights is that Devon has more will than I thought and Bradley has a lot more skill than I thought. I think this fight is a pick’em. I think in the tenth round we are going to see that the fight is on the table going into the eleventh and twelfth rounds”. For me that sums it all up nicely, and forced to pick, I lean towards Devon Alexander by the slimmest of margins, maybe via split decision after scoring a flash knockdown somewhere along the way.

Jeff Stoyanoff

Coming off the pick of my life here….oh the pressure…man, this is tough…

On the one hand, it would seem that Timothy Bradley should have an advantage in that he has more big fight experience as a pro having faced the slightly tougher opposition in his career, having said that, Devon Alexander is not the only one taking a step up here.  Alexander will likely be the fastest opponent that Bradley has seen in his career and given that Bradley has been known to struggle against some of the faster fighters he has faced, most notably Kendall Holt, the danger here is very real.  Both men are stepping up, but I believe Bradley is slightly more prepared for the moment.

Bradley has an effective, if not slightly dirty, fight style that can be frustrating to his opponent and it will frustrate Alexander.  In fact, don’t be surprised if there is a butt or two that influences the bout.  Still, Alexander’s speed will be a major factor and he will get some good work done against Bradley.  But, the awkward physical style of Bradley will wear down Alexander and produce a very tight decision win.

Geno McGahee

Alexander by UD or late stoppage over Bradley.  Bradley has been hurt by fighters like Alexander but none of them were as sharp as him, and although Bradley has improved, I don’t see him winning.

Tally

Alexander -6

Bradley -7
