Christopher Diaz Looking To Become the Next Puerto Rican Star

Fight fans, we have another great weekend of fight action. Most of the attention will be focused on the Mikey Garcia vs Robert Easter, JR. fight at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Across the pond, we have an interesting showdown between Dillian Whyte Vs Joseph Parker in the Heavyweight division. However, much attention should also be focused on the ESPN+ card taking place in Florida featuring Puerto Rico’s new top contender Christopher Diaz.
Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz 23-0, 15 KO’s from Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, is headlining this Saturday’s ESPN card. He has been boxing professionally for almost five years and has risen from prospect to top contender. So far Diaz has been impressive and he scored three stoppages last year. Back in March of this year, he scored a stoppage victory over Braulio Rodriguez. Diaz possesses good hand speed and good punching power. He has a powerful right hand and a strong left hook. From what I have seen, when he hurts his opponents, he makes the effort to finish them. He also has shown the ability to mix his punches to the head and the body. It’s a good sign of things to come for the young 23 year old and makes for a good action TV fighter. He is currently ranked number one by the WBO and he will get his first title shot against Japan’s Masayuki Ito 23-1-1, 12 KO’s. The fight will be for the WBO World Super Featherweight title vacated by Vasyl Lomachenko. His opponent, Ito, is unknown to the American audience, but like all Japanese fighters, they are tough fighters. So we should expect a good fight. This will be a great opportunity for Diaz to display his skills and see what he is made of.
Currently there are four world champions from Puerto Rico. They are Emmanuel Rodriguez (IBF Bantamweight Champion), Angel Acosta (WBO Light Flyweight Champion), Alberto Machado (WBA Super Featherweight Champion), and Amanda Serrano (WBO Female Super Bantamweight Champion). Should Diaz win this weekend, he will become the fifth world champion from the island. This will also lead him to bigger fights against the other top fighters in the Super Featherweight division. Names such as Miguel Berchelt, Miguel Roman, Gervonta Davis and fellow countrymen Alberto Machado could be future opponents for Diaz.
Even though we have a few champions from Puerto Rico, it is still up for grabs on who will take the mantle as the next star. Since the retirement of Miguel Cotto and Felix Verdejo out of the picture for now, the hunt is on for the next star. Diaz hopes to fill the void and become the next great fighter from Puerto Rico.
