Boxing fans have a lot to be excited about in the Heavyweight division. As of now we are seeing the top fighters in the division face each other. Of course all hopes are for a Deontay Wilder vs Anthony Joshua fight in the future, but for the time being it won’t happen yet. Deontay Wilder is looking to fight Tyson Fury hopefully by the end of the year. Anthony Joshua will be fighting Alexander Povetkin in September. In the meantime, there are two other top heavyweights looking for a chance to fight either Joshua or Wilder down the road. They are Luis Ortiz and Jarrell Miller. While the two fighters wait for their chance to secure those big fights, maybe they should fight each other.
Luis “King Kong” Ortiz from Cuba, has an impressive record of 29-1, with 25 KO’s and was an outstanding amateur fighter with a record of 349-19. The 39 year old hard punching southpaw was steamrolling his opponents and has beaten good fighters such as Malik Scott, Bryant Jennings, and Tony Thompson. After eight years as a professional, Ortiz finally got his break and earned a shot at WBC World Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder earlier this year. What Ortiz and Wilder produced at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn was epic and is now a fight of the year candidate. Ortiz came up short in the fight and lost by a 10th round TKO. While Wilder won the fight, Ortiz came out a winner as well, due to his performance in the fight. Ortiz was able to come back from a knockdown in round three and almost knocked out Wilder in round seven. He gave Wilder a run for his money. Ortiz showed heart, toughness, and the will to win. Ortiz could have taken time off but instead came back last weekend. Ortiz knocked out Razvan Cojanu in the 2nd round with a brutal straight left hand. Ortiz made a statement and showed why he still is a force in the Heavyweight division. He definitely deserves a rematch with Wilder or a fight with Joshua.
Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller from Brooklyn, New York, also has an impressive record of 21-0-1, with 18 KO’s. Miller does not have an extensive amateur record like Ortiz or even anything close to it. Miller started his boxing career at the age of 21 and was also a professional kickboxer too. Miller ended with a kickboxing record of 21-2, with 9 KO’s. His only two losses in kickboxing was to legend Mirko Cro Cop Miller has been boxing for nine years now, but is finally making noise in the Heavyweight division. Miller has been impressive in his career and has beaten good fighters such as Gerald Washington, Mariusz Wach, and Johann Duhaupas. For about a good two years now, Miller has been calling out the top Heavyweights. He has climbed up at the top of the division and is itching closer to a shot against Wilder or Joshua. Most recently at a press conference, Miller was calling out Joshua and talked some trash at the British champion. I don’t think Miller is quite ready yet and it would be best in my opinion that he trims down in weight. The nickname “Big Baby” is fitting for him as Miller is a big man. Miller weighed in about 300 pounds at his last fight and that weight would not serve him well against the likes of Wilder or Joshua.
So in the meantime, how about a showdown between King Kong and Big Baby? The fight would be intriguing. Both men are huge with big punching power and both men are the same height at 6’4”. Ortiz is a southpaw who likes to counter punch. Miller is an orthodox fighter who comes forward and applies pressure. Each fighter likes to go for the knockout, which pleases the fans and the fight can end in a knockout at any time. The winner should land the big fight at either Joshua or Wilder. This fight will show who wants it more, but for me I believe Miller is the one who needs to make a statement. So far I have not been too impressed with him and seems to be getting a lot of buzz due to his size. Let’s say if he were to beat Ortiz, then we can say he is for real. So far, Ortiz has fought the better quality of fighters and already fought for the championship.
So if these two were to matchup for real, who would win?
I would have Ortiz winning by unanimous decision. I believe Miller would be able to take the punches of Ortiz and go to the distance. However, Ortiz has the better skill level and would be quicker of the two fighters.
