Mykal “The Professor” Fox, 18-0, 4 KO’s, was in action on Saturday, August 17, as he took on veteran DeMarcus “Chop-Chop” Corley, 51-32-1, 28 KO’s, at Maryland Live! Casino in Hanover, MD. The fight was broadcasted live via CBS Sports Network. The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds at the June welterweight limit of 140 pounds. Referee Brent Bovell was the third man in the ring as the action commenced.
Fox set the tone early with a long jab and was able to land a nice left straight to kick things off. Fox used a lot of movement to keep the veteran, twice his age, at bay. The 22 year old fox remained very active on the outside in the second as Corley continued to look for a way on the inside. Fox, who stands 6’3 ½, tactically planned to be on the outside using his massive reach advantage.
Fox continued to pepper Corley with the jab and straight left in the third. Corley looked to open up his arsenal but found himself missing widely on many shots. Corley landed a right hook in the fourth, his best punch of the fight. Fox, though, continued to be the more active fighter and landed the cleaner shots. Fox, trained by his father, also had his brother, Alantez Fox, in his corner.
While Fox was able to maintain his active movement in the fifth, Corley seemed to be getting closer and closer as the round wore on. Stil, Corley hadn’t yet landed anything significant enough to slow Fox down or break his confidence. Corley did a decent job of cutting the ring off early in the sixth round. Fox was not deterred and continued to stick to his game plan.
Corley started to dig into the body more when he and fox were tied up on the inside. Fox was effective with the left straight, likely his best punch. Fox had another great round in the eighth and continued to impose his will. Both fighters remained game in the ninth as Corley saw some success with Fox backed into the ropes in what was Corley’s most active round since the midway point.
In the 10th and final round of the contest Fox continued to use his skills and long reach to keep the wily veteran from getting to him before being caught midway through with a hard right hook to body. Fox still continued to stick to his game plan in what looked to be a dominant overall performance. The official scores were 96-94, twice, and 98-92 in favor of the winner, Mykal Fox. Fox moves ahead to bigger and better things at 140 as he looks to continue to make his mark.
