With the recent announcement of a big boxing card coming back to Chicago on October 6, there is now other rumors of another big boxing event coming. Lately there has been rumblings of a potential Julio Cesar Chavez, JR. Vs Mike Lee fight taking place in the Windy City sometime early next year. If this fight can be finalized, this would be another huge event and another boost of boxing that Chicago needs.

Mike Lee is undefeated at 21-0, with 11 KO’s and has been making a name for himself in the Chicagoland area. The Notre Dame graduate is also a 2009 Chicago Golden Gloves Champion and has also got a lot of attention on Subway commercials. Lee’s last fight was about two and half months ago at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. He had a tough fight against Jose Hernandez but won a clear 10 round unanimous decision. So far Lee has done well in his professional career and wants to continue to make his way to the top of the Light Heavyweight division. He has called out for big fights and wants title fights at either Super Middleweight or Light Heavyweight. Lee will now need an opponent to show what he is really about. That brings us to a fighter that Lee would love to fight and has been calling out. That is Julio Cesar Chavez, JR.
Julio Cesar Chavez, JR. from Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, who has a record of 50-3-1, with 32 KO’s, has been boxing now for 15 years now.

Even though Chavez, JR. is young at the age of 31, like Mike Lee, he started boxing at the tender age of 17. Chavez, JR. got to a quick start in his career and rose to fame as he is the son of the legend, Julio Cesar Chavez, SR. Chavez, JR.’s most defining moments in his career was when he won the WBC Middleweight title against Sebastian Zbik and also in his 3rd title defense with a stoppage victory over Andy Lee. Chavez, JR. also put a great effort in his 4th title defense against Sergio Martinez, but lost the fight despite almost knocking out Martinez in the final 12th round. However, these fights took place in 2011 and 2012, which was quite some time ago. Since then Chavez, JR. has been in lackluster performances. An out of shape Chavez, JR. got beat by Andrezj Fonfara, where Chavez, JR. quit on his stool after the 9th round. In his last fight that took place last year, Chavez, JR. lost to Canelo Alvarez by a 12 round unanimous decision in a disappointing fight. Two failed drug tests and lack of training have also hurt Chavez, JR. in his career as well.

All of this makes a potential Chavez, JR. Vs Lee fight more of an attraction. You have the boxer Lee vs the puncher Chavez, JR. Lee is looking for that big defining fight and a win over Chavez, JR. would do it for him. Chavez, JR. would be looking to prove that he is still a force to be reckon with. A win over Lee can land him another big fight in the future. Also, it makes a lot of sense to do the fight in Chicago, as Lee would bring his hometown fans and Chavez, JR. would bring in the Mexican-American fans from the community.
Next question is: Who would win this fight?

If the fight is at 168 lbs., 175 lbs., or the famous catch weight, I lean towards Chavez, JR. winning this fight. However, Lee would have a better shot of winning if the fight takes place at 175 lbs. which is his natural weight class. Even though Chavez, JR. is not the best fighter, he has fought the better opposition thus far. He has also shown toughness and a great chin. Lee has looked good in his fights, but so far he has not fought anybody notable. He still needs to prove himself and a fight with Chavez, JR. would be his biggest test. Can he pass the test? Let’s hope the fight becomes a reality and takes place in Chicago.
