Brent Weedman – Don Hornbuckle: Bellator 35 Results

By Kevin Nelson

The first leg of the bellator welterweight tournament took place last night on mtv2. This field of welterweights for season 4 promise to be the most talented in recent memory. Here are the results for the first round of the tournament.

Brent Weedman, 18-5-1, decision over Dan Hornbuckle, 22-3

The first round was a close fight with Weedman taking down Hornbuckle. The fight would take place over three hard grueling rounds with the heavily favored Hornbuckle losing a decision. Weedman managed to exact revenge from an earlier career loss to Hornbuckle.

Many feel it was a close fight but I agree with the decision and look forward to seeing Weedman in action. He tried in the first two rounds getting Hornbuckle caught in submissions but each round came to a close before he could successfully submit him.

Hornbuckle took the third and was successful as well with take downs and some stand-up exchanges. he will be back as he is one of the most talented welterweights in Bellator.

Rick Hawn, 10-0, decision Jim Wallhead, 21-6

It’s hard to believe Hawn has only been in MMA for a couple of years as he managed to outbox the veteran Wallhead over three rounds. Hawn, at age 34, has a black belt in judo and jiu-jitsu and looks to be the kind of fighter that continues to improve. I get the feeling we have not seen Hawn in his prime yet. He is victorious and moves on to the semi finals as Wallhead has to go back to the drawing board.

Jay Hieron, 20-4, submits Anthony Lapsley, 19-5

Hieron dominated from the time the bell sounded to begin as he overwhelmed Lapsley and managed to get a choke on Lapsley. A bit of controversy as the referee waved the fight over as Hieron had the choke on. But Lapsley would spring to his feet and explain to the referee that he did not get choked out. The referee would explain that he thought Lapsley was out.

Lyman Good, 11-1, decision Chris Lozano, 6-1

Lozano had six wins with 6 knockouts and it seemed as soon as his eye had closed he had trouble seeing and Good took advantage throughout the fight and picked up a decision victory over Lozano. Good is the former Bellator welterweight champion and is looking to move on to face the champion that dethroned him Ben Askren.

Bellator aftermath:

The semi-finals have been announced with Lyman Good (11-1) set to face Rick Hawn( 10-0) and Brent Weedman (18-5-1) will face Jay Hieron( 20-4) on the April 2 card to go along with Eddie Alvarez defending his Bellator lightweight title against Pat Curran also expected on the card is former UFC fighter Ben Saunders.
