Megamind (2010)
Superhero movies are very popular and they all typically follow the same theme. There is the hero and then there is the evil force that they must defeat to save the people. In MEGAMIND, we have a new take on the same story and it is an amusing and very interesting movie for all audiences.
Megamind (Will Ferrell) was sent to earth and became immediate enemies with Metro Man (Brad Pitt), and they would go to war over and over again with Metro Man always winning. The script was the same. Megamind would kidnap Roxanne (Tina Fey), threaten to kill her, Metro Man would rescue her, Megamind would go to prison, and he’d escape and repeat. When a museum is opened celebrating Metro Man, Megamind tricks him and ends up with his first victory but discovers that without a hero to fight, life is boring.
Using Metro Man’s DNA, a goof is injected with super powers and now “Titan” was born. Titan (Jonah Hill), was a cameraman for Roxanne and had a thing for her and although he enjoyed the powers, he didn’t fall into the role of hero. He became a worse villain then Megamind could ever be. Now the roles are flipped and Megamind must be the good guy and take down Titan.
Why is Jonah Hill so popular? There has not been a role that I have enjoyed him in, but yet, he is the cat’s fat meow, and I don’t get it. Even as Titan, his voice is so annoying that it is hard to sit through, but he did do a good job of making an unlikable character, so I have to give him credit there.
MEGAMIND proves to be just as funny and interesting as MONSTERS VS ALIENS and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, and is good fun for children of all ages. Will Ferrell is perfect for the lead role and you can’t help but to like Megamind from the moment he is on the screen. His sidekick, a fish head robot, Minion (David Cross) is another humorous character.
I also loved the choice of 1980’s heavy metal music that they opted to use. In the showdown scene between Megamind and Titan, Guns N Roses’ hit “Welcome to the Jungle” is blasting. This, along with some AC/DC set the mood…you can’t help but to get excited, especially if you are stuck in the 80s like me.
MEGAMIND is a great movie. If you have kids, they will love it, and if you don’t have kids, you will love it. It hits all groups, young and old. I highly recommend it.
RSR Rating: 8/10. Original super hero movie.
