T FuryBy Donald “Braveheart” Stewart

The way you behave can sometimes fool an adoring public into what it wants to believe. After bruising his ankle, Tyson Fury went off to France to watch England fall out of Europe for the second time in a week.
But wait…

Isn’t he supposed to be in training for a world title? Oh yes of course his holiday abroad is all because he has postponed it and he apparently needs a bit of fun. His trainer and Uncle, Peter Fury was quick enough to let us know that but with Tyson Fury bizarre is never far away…
Then we get to Sunday and a tabloid headline in the popular newspaper, The Sunday Mirror, which claims that both Tyson and his little cousin Hughie are being investigated over doping claims. There was a report that said both of them, in 2015, tested positive for the banned substance, Nandrolone.

In the meantime, over in France, Fury danced, spent 1,000 Euro on a round of drinks for a bar full of English supporters and gave us all plenty to fuel an adoring public’s love for the maverick. In the meantime, in a boxing ring in London, Anthony Joshua 17-0, 17 KO’s, unpicked Dominic Breazeale 17-1, 15 KO’s, and defended his IBF belt. Joshua, who has had years of being tested as an Olympic athlete, talked of how he was even followed to the popular eating chain Nandos by one tester in the run up to his fight with Breazeale.

It seemed strange to me that this story should surface right now. The question is, of course, is there any truth in it? Everyone with the surname Fury denies it. They have described the whole story as dumbfounding. They legal teams are, allegedly, on the case.
The story itself is intriguing. The story appeared in one newspaper and did not initially appear in any other, though now the reports are interestingly about the report of the allegation and not the allegation itself.

To be fair, right now, our newspapers are filled with politics and the UK leaving the European Union, so it might just be a story for which nobody has room. The British Boxing Board of Control has yet to authoritatively speak – apart from saying it is “wait and see.”
And that’s where I have an issue….

IF Tyson and Hughie have NOT had a negative sample, then the BBBC would surely say – this is nonsense. Bravely defending the honor of their sport should be a top priority for them and here it is a no brainer. If Tyson and Hughie have nothing to be concerned about then they do have a case for taking the BBBC on for leaving them high and dry…

The reports of their alleged drug taking have said that both were quizzed before the first Fury/Klitschko fight due to unnatural levels of nandrolone in their systems. If there was any doubt over Tyson’s taking of an illegal substance, why did the first fight take place? Apparently this was eight to nine months before the fight.

BUT….

IF there is some truth in this, despite the view from manager and trainer and fighters and promotors, Hennessy Sports that they are baffled by the news report, the BBBC response makes sense. They must surely be aware when a licenced fighter might be under suspicion. They will not be the last to know. They shall be one of the first – and their view that we should wait and see therefore makes sense. It makes you question why lawyers are involved at all if all that has happened is that both fighters have been asked in to explain themselves as this is all that has been reported.

The sympathy I might have for the Furies is fuelled by the fact that they are not what the BBBC or boxing in general want as front men for their sport. The Furies would suggest that this is due to racism and their gypsy descent. Due to Tyson’s sexist, racist and homophobic outbursts makes this contention is a little less than credible.

As I have written before, Tyson’s views are genuinely held. He is a deeply devout believer in a fundamental Catholic philosophy which guides his life. He is devoted to his family and is a man who has worked incredibly hard to get to where he is now. There is much to admire from his chin down, and little to respect at times, as a progressive, from his chin up.

Having said that, if this is a non story then the allegations that they are targeted because of their racial heritage is despicable.

Unfortunately for both Furry’s the idea of a massive Anthony Joshua/Wladimir Klitschko 64-4, 53 KO’s, outdoor fight for 2017 has got people talking. If Fury is found guilty and then banned he might just chuck it. The WBO, IBO, WBA and Ring titles, along with the IBF title held by Joshua on the line in a massive 2017 showdown would whet the appetite and could be the biggest fight of the 21st century so far. It could eclipse Mayweather/Pacquiao only because it might ignite and be massively explosive.

Unfortunately, the possibility of Tyson being stripped has most of us talking as if he is not there. It is massively disrespectful and even though I do not share Tyson’s views on a number of things, he deserves the opportunity to wash this stain from his character.
