On Friday, Lamont Roach, JR., 17-0-1, 7 KO’s, faced off against Deivi Bassa, 20-5, 12 KO’s.

The fight went down in Cancun, Mexico, and was the featured bout of the Golden Boy on ESPN fight card. Both fighters felt each other out in the first round. There were no major blows that hurt either fighter but Roach, JR., was the more active fighter. In the second, Roach landed a heavy right cross 30 seconds in, the most significant of the fight thus far. Bassa remained active but was again caught with a solid right uppercut that snapped Bassa’shead. Roach, JR., again caught him with a snapping left straight near the minute mark.

Both fighters met each other in the center of the ring ready to strike as the third started. Roach, JR., found a bit of success behind the jab. Bassa again stayed active but missed a number of shots thrown from distance. With around 40 seconds remaining in the third, Roach, JR., caught Bassa with thunderous combination capped off by a right cross that dropped Bassa. After making the count, Bassa was on the defensive as Roach, JR., honed in looking for the kill in an aggressive fashion. Bassa, though was able to hold on until the bell rang.

Roach, JR., dialed it back a bit in the fourth as he came out patient looking to set up another solid shot. Bassa seemed to have regained himself as he landed a snapping left straight of his own midway through the round. In round five, Roach, JR., continued to patiently stalk Bassa, who himself continued to look for that significant shot. Bassa was again hit with a hard right from Roach, JR., midway through. In the latter part of the round, Roach focused on the body for a period before again scoring solid punches with the right hand.

In round six, Bassa hit Roach, JR., with an accidental low blow that required him to take a bit of time to recover. Roach, JR., came out of the break aggressive as he continued to land a number of hooks on the game Bassa. Roach again started to look for the body shot on occasion though Bassa remained active and landed a few good left hooks. Surprisingly, Bassa retired in his corner and the fight was stopped. While Bassa remained active, he was sporadically landing shots and missed a number wildly.

Officially, Roach, JR., was awarded the technical knockout victory at the start of round seven. Roach, JR., looked good in this fight and was able to adapt to a quality opponent with an awkward style. He’ll head back to the Washington, DC., with his head high as he prepares for the next opportunity.

With that, stay tuned to RSR…
