Jaime Munguia Vs Liam Smith – A Fight Recap

By Tyler “The Miracle Man” White

This past weekend, not long after Oleksandr Usyk defeated Murat Gassiev, current WBO Super Welterweight World Champion Jaime Munguia, took on Liam Smith in his first World title defense since beating Sadam Ali earlier on this year.

Despite the wide points victory that Munguia secured at the end of the 12×3 minute rounds, this fight was a lot more give and take than the scorecards suggested.

The fresh, 21 year old Mexican, looked far bigger and heavier than former WBO World Champion and professional boxing veteran Liam “Beefy” Smith when they both entered the ring.

With this in mind, the Liverpudlian started the fight off looking to outbox and outsmart the young champion. Smith had a lot of success in the first 4 rounds, getting behind his jab well and landing consistently with the counter right hands over the top.

Smith started strong, even landing some big hooks and combinations, however, the size difference was obvious as his punches didn’t seem to effect the – at times – almost defenceless Mexican.

After those first few rounds, the tide began to turn as Munguia warmed up and began to look a lot more lively. Bouncing on his toes, turning up the pressure and ramping up the pace.

His heavy hands were getting through and soon enough the young Mexican fighter scored a knockdown in the 6th round, scrambling Smith’s senses with a well placed left hook.

As the fight went on, Munguia went on to dominate, with his physical strength and power becoming more and more obvious as the rounds progressed.

Liam Smith, however, with his incredibly huge heart, pride and toughness, continued to press on and had success in landing clean shots on his younger opponent.

However, it wasn’t meant to be for Smith, as Munguia hunted him down with vicious and heavy shots to both the head and body.

The hard hitting 21 year old finished off the last few rounds of the fight in a true, Mexican fashion, smashing in the body shots and relentlessly pressing forwards.

With the judges scoring the fight: 116-111, 119-110, 119-108, Jaime Munguia walked away with his title still around his waist and another victory on his record.

However, the young talent will have to work hard on his defense if he’s going to take on the big names in his division and must not just rely on his size and power if he is to make a real big statement and reach the elite level of the Professional ranks.

Liam Smith can fly back home to Liverpool with his head held high, before he thinks of what the next step is for him in his own career.

Both men put together an exciting performance and gave the fight fans 12 rounds of entertainment. If you’ve not watched this fight yet, then it’s definitely one I’d recommend catching up on as it was non-stop from the first bell, until the last!
