The Oscar De La Hoya Slip Up: Floyd Mayweather JR – Manny Pacquiao Done Deal?

One of the most powerful men in boxing and a man that has had a stake in many of the major fights of the last 15 years, Oscar De La Hoya, was reportedly quoted to say that the mega fight between Floyd Mayweather, JR., and Manny Pacquiao is “very close” to completion. A source close to Team Mayweather has also reported to RSR that the specifics have been ironed out and that the only thing that remains is the contract signing and subsequent announcement of the fight. Is it too good to be true?

Strikeforce – Presented by Showtime: MMA Hits LA

By Gina L. Caliboso (At Ringside)
Los Angeles has been a hectic place to be the last couple of days, notably because of a certain now NBA Championship Lakers versus Celtics series to Game 7, the E-3 Convention, and last, but not at all least – Strikeforce, presented by Showtime and held at Nokia Live. In Wednesday night’s events, the main draw had each fight going 3 rounds at 5 minutes each. In Strikeforce, there are no knees, kicks, elbow strikes to the head of a grounded opponent.
Chad Dawson Set to Face Jean Pascal on August 14th

Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) and Gary Shaw Productions have officially announced that WBC light heavyweight world champion Jean Pascal (25-1-0, 16KO) will make a third defense of his title against undefeated IBO light heavyweight champ Chad “Bad” Dawson (29-0-0, 17KO) on Saturday, August 14th at the Bell Centre in Montreal. “After several discussions we agreed that the best place for this historic fight to take place would be Montreal . Thanks to Gary Shaw we were able to count on HBO’s participation, as they have broadcast all of Chad Dawson’s matches since 2008. This will be without a doubt the most important boxing event in history in which a fighter from Quebec has participated in the main event” said Yvon Michel, president of GYM.
Vitali Klitschko to Nikolay Valuev, 1.5 Million or Pack Sand!

“That was eight months ago for a stadium fight,” said Bernd Bönte, Managing Director of the Klitschko Management Group. “Now for weeks we offered them 1.5 million and that’s it. Still more than he gets or even got in any other fight. Valuev comes from a clear defeat against Haye, and all but the judges saw a loss against Holyfield. This is a typical King game. He has nowhere to go. Austin fights Solis for the mandatory position and Valuev has two options left: fight Vitali or fight Haye in a rematch. But we will definitely not raise the money. If Valuev wouldn’t be over seven foot we wouldn’t even discuss a fight. He can take it or fight Haye again.”
Nikolay Valuev Wants Vitali Klitschko Now!

“No more lies, K2,” Team Valuev said today. “No more posturing. No more subterfuge. No more deceit.” Team Valuev announced today that they will accept an offer made by K2 Promotions for former two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolai “Russian Giant” Valuev (50-2, 34 KOs), from St. Petersburg, Russia., to face World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (40-2, 38 KOs), from Ukraine. Promoter Don King said much misinformation has been disseminated regarding his position and statements pertaining to Valuev, the fighter he represents with Sauerland Event.

Saturday’s Super Six: Andre Ward Tries to Fend Off the Allan Green Challenge

World class boxing in 2010 has been ho-hum this year, with my man Manny Pacquiao going to school and becoming elected to public office, his boxing life has been temporarily shelved.
Meanwhile, I peruse the boxing headlines and I could have sworn a certain undefeated potential opponent (aka: Floyd Mayweather) has been rumored to be retiring for the second time. There was Joshua Clottey – Pacquiao, Chris Arreola – Tomasz Adamek, Vitali Klitschko and some other person, etc. etc. It’s been an okay boxing year, but the Super 6 Tournament remains as a key headliner for premier boxing, except now it’s between two Americans.

Vargas’ attorney Greg Ramirez told the Star that Pecora allegedly pocketed about $400,000 and lost millions by mismanaging Vargas’ financial affairs. Ramirez also said the Vargas family had to move out of their home as a result and Vargas might have to start training to get back in the ring.

This Saturday, June 19th, the Super Six tournament resumes with an intriguing second round match up between Andre Ward and Allan Green. The Boxing Weekend: Showtime Super Six Continues

-Friday-
ESPN2 Friday Night Fights
Spokane, Washington
This Friday, on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights, junior middleweight Sherzod Husanov, 14-0-1, 7 KO’s, takes on Jhon Berrio, 15-6, 11 KO’s, in a ten round bout. Husanov is the WBC International Light Middleweight Champion, claiming victory over Timur Nergadze, a fighter he drew with in their first encounter. Other than Nergadze, Husanov has not faced anyone of note. The trend continues Friday night as he takes on the upset-minded, Berrio. In his last ten fights, he is 4 wins, 6 losses, and doesn’t appear to present much of a challenge. This is a rather weak main event for Friday’s show.
Movie Review: Shutter Island

It was an impulse buy…that’s what it was. I was walking around Target and picked up several items, but there was nothing fun for me. I bought my son some toys and some household cleaning stuff, but zippo for me. I wanted to buy something. They had this display and there was SHUTTER ISLAND. I remember seeing the trailer for it and it looked sharp and they had it for $16.99, so I said “what the heck?” I was going to buy it on Blu Ray…the new big deal, but they wanted $26.99 for it. Since it was merely an impulse buy, I would not risk throwing away 27 bucks…just 17 if the movie stunk.

Remember When: Sean O'Grady Vs Hilmer Kenty

The date was April 12, 1981. On a happy note, my father, the sole person who planted the seed of boxing in my mind, turned 53, and on the same day, but not on such a bright note, legendary Heavyweight Champion of the World, Joe “The Brown Bomber” Louis passed away, at the age of 66.
